My Canon printers have two black ink cartridges - a regular-sized one and a large one. Which one is used for regular, black text printing?
Hope you find out and let us know as I have a Canon also.
If I had to make a guess, the large black is for document printing as the small black is the same size as the colors.
Do you still have the box from the ink? (I don't.) Maybe it states the type of ink in each cartridge (dye/pigment).
If it does, then the black tank ink type that matches the color tanks is for "color" printing.
I had that also on an MX-920. Never confirmed it, but always assumed the "fat" black one was for regular document printing and the other was for photos.
Own some Epson printers have the same, Large black for documents small black has photo black written on it.
Found that the large 250 is pigment based.
Still looking for the 251 type...
Found it:
In contrast, the BK cartridge is used for photos. It holds dye-based black ink that is designed to last longer and retain its color longer when printed on coated photo paper. Used for regular document printing, the page black ink cartridge (PGBK) has twice the capacity of photo black (BK).

I believe the larger tank is pigment ink used for documents. The smaller tank is dye ink for photos.

If it's like my EPSON the large black is for regular use, the small black is PB (photoblack).
(Don't read the thread....)
My Epson had a Black and a Photo Black.

One is probably PK and the other is probably MK. PK is photo black and MK is mat black
The PK is used for regular document printing and photo printing. Do not regularly switch between the two. Doing so uses ink.
Just a guess but the larger cartridge will be utilized the most, i.e. everyday printing. the smaller cartridge will be used for photo printing more often.
The ink selection depdnds on the type paper you are printing on. PK photo for glossey, semi mat and luster papers, MK matt for water color and other fine art type papers. That is Epxon and probably most other printers. Hope this helps.
