This is a magnified view of a preserved mantis sent to me by Bill (newtoyou) for focus stacking sessions and here's a shout out of thanks to him.
This view showcases the Ocelli which are its simple eyes. All adult insects that have compound eyes also have ocelli, usually located on the back of the head or face such as this mantis. I have learned from reading a book on entomology also given to me that insects can have two to three simple eyes which are not used for discriminating among visual images, but instead are useful for detecting changes in light.
This focus stacked image was taken utilizing a reverse mounted 28mm lens connected to a reverse mounted magnifying lens and bellows used as extension to increase magnification. This is a 301 image stack processed in Zerene Stacker. Illumination was provided by constant powered diffused LED lamps.
As always, thanks in advance to all who view and for your comments, suggestions, questions and critique.
Thanks Mark. Although I focused on its simple eyes, I thought that he textures of the Mantis skin were also quite interesting.
Thanks Brenda. I always look forward to hearing from you.
