that an image like this would have been better shot in The Golden Hour. Convention would argue there's a falseness to it because more is shown than The Eye Can See in a single glance. Convention would claim its a Place With A Name, and see it only literally.
Convention would contend an image like this has --or does not have-- Visual Impact. Convention would argue it does --or does not-- convey Mood or Emotion or Feeling. Convention would use various words, and would make various claims, and to the conventionally minded, those contentions would be incontestable.
I would contend otherwise.
It definately has impact. Convention be damned. A beautiful shot.

Very nice. Precisely where is this?
I would contend I like it, therefore it is a good picture. If I didn't like it, it would be a bad picture. Convention be damned.

Where is this? Its anywhere a mind meanders beneath cold and lowering skies. Its where thoughts loop their ways past obstacles. Its where you want to say there's a beginning and an end, but you're sure there's somehow something more outside the frame.
Which is probably not the conventional way of saying its a view of the San Juan River at 'Goosenecks State Park' here in Utah.
Fine shot, Jim! Everyone knows that you cannot believe political conventions.
Great composition - beautiful shot.
A perfect illustration of sinuosity. Like it.

My Convention is basic (with many parts). Do I like the photo? Sometimes that decision to like is made at first viewing. At other times the decision to like is made after studying the photo. Your photo was liked at first viewing although it did require further study to decide what was being viewed. Having been to your part of the world several times, horseshoe bends are interesting. There is usually only one viewed or in a photo. Am I correct when I state there are three such bends in your photo even though the actual bends are not viewed? Thanks for sharing.

You're correct, Jack; there are, literally, three bends shown in this image. As well, there are another dozen 'horseshoe bends' in the immediate region (up and/or downriver, + or -, 3 to 4 miles) along the San Juan R. But mentioning those others would be something of a meander....

Beautiful picture. Is that Gooseneck Bends? I was last there in the sixties, with a group of archaeology students. Our bus broke down there.

If I do get back to Utah, I must remember the San Juan River. As I mentioned. I have been to Utah a number of times to ski and to meetings. Have certainly enjoyed visiting your State. Remember staying at the Little America Hotel in SLC on a couple of visits.

Close enough, ht; the actual name of the place is 'Goosenecks State Park.' Overall, archaeology in the area hasn't changed a whole lot since you were there in the '60's. Except that being there now is more like being there in the '50's. Either way, all the archaeologists I know still dig it. Regardless, it would be a tough place to have a bus go belly up on you; I mean
really! Krikey!!! there's no cell reception or
anything!
