this morning, was dark and had shutter speed too slow - some potentially good shots got away, should have upped ISO more so that I could have had faster shutter.

Piet,
I don't think shutter speed is an issue here I don't see any motion blur. It seems more like an under exposure issue.

That's a pretty good shot of the bird, it's just a little dark. Your right, bringing up the iso might have helped.

Gotta say I find the image compelling. The dark cast of the image represents well what I often see (and rarely capture) around the local plains lakes. I like to just sit and wait for dusk to settle before heading home. More often than not I will be joined by several of these beautiful creatures.

I had some free time and while cold, I did as you say - except it was morning time, but very dusk like with heavy clouds. My heart leaps when they fly near.

thanks Jack and Ched - the shot was handheld with a 600 mm lens at f/6.3, 1/1000, ISO at 2000. Here is the next frame where it started to hover for a second and my panning must have moved past it - the legs blurred on me a little bit, this one will have to become part of an art project, but I wish I had greater detail for sure. Just raw processing, but this way you see what comes out of the camera before post... Or perhaps I was just starting to lose focus...

What was the shutter? I like to shoot auto ISO for these type of shot when I can. One less thing to think about. Its surprises me how high it will climb some times thow.
