While my camera is still set up with the microscope objective, magnifiers and extensions, I looked for something that would make a good study and I put this feather from a grey dove in front of it to see what it would look like under magnification.
My first impression was that the small shaft looked like a tree trunk. The vanes of the feather show how they are interlocked to create a closed surface to catch air for their flight. All in all, I found it to be quite interesting.

Very interesting! This well deserves more exploring.
Other feathers would be rewarding too. You can get peacock feathers (iridescent blue and green) and other feathers very easily at one of those big box art stores.
