Don't know what it might be like in your area, but around here, juniper is one of the mainstays of the wood stove cabal. Only problem is, there's been a proliferation of little two-tracks that lead off into nowhere (a.k.a., wood gathering) areas that over time have left me a little disoriented. Back 'in the day' I knew that the way to get to the place I wanted to get to was to turn left at the third two-track along the such-and-such trail, but now there's fifty-eight other little 'roads' in that selfsame area that weren't there just a few years ago. Maps, Google Earth, local lore; nothin' works any more. I haz a sad!

It’s wetter here in eastern OR than where you are and generally the ground is steeper. Steep enough that creating new unapproved roads isn’t easy or smart. Short jags on flat ground yes do occur to get around a big stump etc but not so as to be a navigation problem. So generally I don’t face your dilemma. I stick to the federal roads and look for a dead one I can harvest without screwing anything up. Fairly easy here.
Regardless I like your shots as I’m always somewhat fascinated by the resilience of juniper.

Re: the resilience of junipers? Ab-soooo-lutely! And fascinating, too, especially in the sense that they (the junipers, and any number of their tree siblings/cousins/dog-catcher's-best friends) are among the Einsteins of the tree-types. Give one a quarter inch of soil, a tenth of an inch of annual precipitation, a little luck, and --whoom!-- off they go on their gnarly ways for the next thousand years.

Understood. Here the state is spending $ to thin them because their proliferation is lowerIng the water table east of the Cascades and it’s historically slim anyway. One of our boys is a FS biologist and says that’s not bs but I’m no expert. Interestingly he told me OR State University tested juniper for fence posts and concluded they are good for about 80 years after a 100 year study. So I built my little greenhouse sills out of it. Assume it will outlive me.
