As a hobby photographer would Photoshop Elements be sufficient for editing landscapes, sunsets, and occasional portraits? I found the 2019 version new on Craigslist for under $50. Would it be worth the invest?

I have used it - and loved it - for several years. In the expert mode you have layers and layer masks, which opens up a whole world of editing options.

Besides expert mode, there is also a "quick edit" tab, and a guided section + tons of online help.

I am pretty happy with it, too. I am now using the 2020 version.

I used several versions with great success. I now moved up to PS/LR and honestly miss several of the very easy options that were available with Elements. FYI, if you start to outgrow Elements, there is a very inexpensive app called Elements+ for about $12 which expands several parts of Elements. It was totally reliable and worth a look when master your edition.
Good luck!

Let me chime in too. I also have been using Photoshop Elements for several years. Prior to switching to elements I was using Photoshop Pro version 7 I started with version 1 I think in 1992. At that time it was job related. I switched to Elements I think at version 3 in about 2005 (about). I have been using consecutive upgraded versions ever since. I have tried and used other editing software. I always came back to Elements. It has a powerful tool kit, It is for me more intuitive, and covers mostly all the bases for my edits. Each version gets better. One of the problems I had with it was the ability to write print profiles (which you could do with Photoshop). You now have some control over that in Elements. It is not the only step in my workflow but it usually is the final. Really if you get it for 50 dollars you miss going out to dinner once. Try it :)

I'm still using an old version of Elements, and plan to upgrade. I love it! Unless there's something very specific you need (and it didn't sound like it from your question), I believe Elements will keep you creative and happy for a long time.

Elements is the only editing program I've used, and at first I found the learning curve steep. But if you spend some time with the tutorials and YouTube videos, I think you'll be amazed at what you can do with it.

Have fun!

2019 version still uninstalled for $50? I'd say it's a good find. Very useful software.

DO NOT use Craigslist it may be used. Buy from ADOBE ONLY. I have Elements 10 14 15. And had cc on $10. month plan for a year, don't like it as well. Go the x money saves head acks.

What I love about Elements is its ability to do everything I want in an editing program. Although not a professional, I do take shots of people for their professional business use, and portraits. And PSE, as I said, has everything I need to make the shots professional looking.

Another thing that’s wonderful is the free editing program I got for editing on the road or on my couch for my iPad.

The only real downside of Elements (which I also like) is that most of the tools are 8 bit.

I'm using Elements 15 and it more than serves my needs. It is relatively easy to learn and intuitive.

Elements put their program on sale each year. I believe the 2019 version was selling for $39.00 at Costco and B&H. Each year they will go on sale.
