Ultimately will try to color this. I started by using a long lens and photographing from 10 feet away to try to get a deeper DOF. Then did my raw processing and ran it through Nik Silver Efex and then turned it into grey scale image to attempt corrections. (for instance, not much to the eyes or face in the camera shot).

Then later I will attempt to convert to color again - in the mean time, I saw that an artist that I much respect is selling an 8 hour tutorial (for seven bucks) where he paints in grey to develop his image and then he colors it after - so I am curious how he does it and what his workflow is (I'm into it about an hour now).. https://www.deviantart.com/bonekrishna/art/Rockbill-Tutorial-Video-815080993 (for those curious or interested).

Anyway, here is camera shot and some mucking about trying to draw a face in. I'll follow up with more images as I continue.

Another nice subject Piet. A while back I posted a colour image that started life as a b&w negative. It had been a cinema poster for Custer’s Last Stand. I bought the negative, converted it in Ps, and then spent hours colouring it using a method learned, I think, from Aaron Nace at Phlearn.com. It involved a little action and was quite straightforward - and felt therapeutical despite there being nothing wrong with me! I highly recommend you pursuing your idea and, knowing you well enough, expect to see this chap pop-up in a composite some time soon!

Hi Dave, perhaps, but perhaps not - usually I try to do the composite first and then color, but regardless, I feel that my coloring skill sucks, so will be happy to advance that knowledge. As I watch the tutorial, I am using this image to try to "work along". It's probably not the best image to work with since I am complicating the problem. The figure is metal, so I have the extra problem of making skin look like skin and leather look like leather and have the rock look like rock. For the face I have subsequently reduced contrast and softened the highlights and it is a little bit better, but not worth putting up yet. But if I can make some headway, perhaps I'll get some more figures and get some free therapy as I work on them.

Hi Curmudegeon - things are going slowly here.. got another hour of the video under my belt - worked on the face some to add detail that was missing, and I attempted to process the face for skin - that is.. since the figure is metal, the whole thing looks like metal. So for the face I reduced the contrast - downed the highlights, lifted the shadows a little and decreased the range of tonal values. I don't know if I went far enough or too far, but the goal was to make the face look less metallic and more skin like.

thanks Jack - another hour of video and another couple of hours of practice working on the hands and arms and stuff. More things to do, but eager to get to the color stage and see what happens. At least this time before I color I will be able to watch someone who actually knows what he is doing do it.

Fascinating to compare the first and this one side by side, and you've only just begun!

thanks Linda and Dave - heck yes, will keep going on this. The video has helped me to be braver in my painting - though it is best described as bumbling in the dark. It will take me a few days to get through the video though to understand how he works with color - his goal is to create photo-realistic paintings while my goal is to create painting-realistic photos (as if that makes sense).

It has been a case of watch - play - watch some more - get an idea and play some more, etc.

It is really coming along nicely. Your work on the hand and forearm really stands out. If you're not careful you are going to turn him into a real person
