They all look great to me. I like the shallow depth of field. I wonder if you could resolve an even slightly sharper level of detail of the texture of the eye? Have you tried using the live view and the 10x zoom in Live View and manual focus of the lens for the very very very precise focus? This might not be an option if this bug was moving, but this is the idea I'd suggest as the next thing to consider. In the same 10x zoom in Live View on the camera's back, you also can place a single focus 'box' on the eye and see if the AF will focus there very very precisely. Many times I will try both, the AF at the 10x live view zoom for a few frames. Then, I go back into Live View and manually focus the same subject for a few frames. I pick out later, on the large computer monitor at 100%, whichever came out the best. Sometimes I'm better, sometimes the AF is better.

Yes, I have tried using the live view and 10X zoom with manual focus on other shots -- but this guy was moving. And I like to have something to rest the camera on for stability when using the 10x zoom.

You mentioned "In the same 10x zoom in Live View on the camera's back, you also can place a single focus 'box' on the eye and see if the AF will focus there very very precisely." I'll have to check this out to see what you mean -- I use manual focus. I didn't consider using AF. A lot of times there isn't enough contrast.

Thanks for the tips!!!

Any reason not to use the af assist beam to improve contrast for auto focus?

That is an interesting suggestion. If handheld, there will be movement of the camera at least during the attempt.
I favor the pictures toward the end, where the critter has more contrast against the background. Those are good pictures!

The joystick lets you move the AF point around in Live View on your 7DII. You said the bug was free to move. Another trick is to move the lens to manual, and use your body movements to move the plane of focus over the subject. This is rather old school, something I use more with my manual focus lenses on mirrorless. But in digital, you can rip off 5- to 10-images as you ever slightly lean forward and back over the subject without changing the focus of the lens. I've used the technique too with DSLRs where every once in a while the AF can't pick-up the super small subject that is at or just inside the minimum focus distance of the lens. You usually have the lens focused to its minimum point, and then sway your body, moving that minimum point over the very close subject.

Keep up the great work!

With shallow depth of field and no photo staking, try to focus a little moe on the eye. Otherwise well done.

Very nice shot. Suggest honing in on the head and whiskers for more detail. Still a nice composition.
