I think it's Chinese sellers who are the leaders in confusing/deceptive/trick ads, whether they're in China or all over the US.
Gotta read the negative feedbacks carefully. If seller's rating is below 97% or so, that's an initial red flag. I've made over 2,700 eBay purchases - majority not photograpy/camera related - that would be serious GAS - lol. Problem is another hobby. Have probably returned less than 5% of purchases. Had to get eBay involved maybe 3 or 4 times.
For the most part, the honest sellers take care of any problems, as they want satisfied customers, and for them I never leave a negative feedback.
In the past two weeks, I've ordered a Sigma Dock and a Used Tokina 11-16mm Zoom for my Nikon from two different (USA) sellers. Strangely, they both both sent items with apparent Canon mounts. Both sellers said they did not take returns in their listings (BS-That's against eBay policy).
With the Sigma Dock (box labeled Canon mount), the seller quickly provided a return label, and my refund, with no intervention by eBay. Was a bit strange, as the original listing stated that there was no box.
Another story with the lens. Seller telling me I could purchase an adapter. I had to use eBay to get involved with that one - providing the label, and even getting the actual refund after proving item was received by the seller. (FYI Seller: anamariasaenz1) I think it was an "honest" mistake. Why list the lens with the wrong mount? As soon as I removed the cover off the back of the lens and it turned the "wrong" way, I knew I had the wrong lens. Seller obviously didn't know that. No box. No marking on lens as to mount type. I'm just guessing that it was a Canon mount. Despite, having slight problems with this transaction, I didn't leave a negative feedback (or Neutral). I don't want to be the one to ruin someone's 100% feedback, nice guy that I am . . . lol.
I've ordered 3 or 4 camera related items from China, Japan & Hong Kong. No problems with any of them, but shipping does take a few weeks. All the sellers had 98% or better feedbacks, and the negative feedbacks did not send up any red flags. Some buyers post negatives about things that are usually out of the seller's control - I generally ignore those.
Ebay provides USPS return labels, which include tracking, but you do have to enter the tracking number yourself in eBay's return tracking log.
I've never lost money on eBay. (Well except for a TriPod purchased from Adorama, which I later saw on Amazon at a cheaper price - also from Adorama) My fault - I usually check eBay prices against Amazon.
