Heading up to Presque Isle for a week next month to enjoy some snow adventures. Are there any locals on this forum to recommend places of interest and great photo opportunities? We are driving from Massachusetts. Thanks!

From Machais up to Lubec and including Campobello many excellent areas to photograph. You need your passport fo Campabllo

I think there is a gorge up in Canada on the border, too.

Lubec is in the southeastern corner Maine, a very long distance from Presque Isle. I surely wouldn't want to be driving Route 1 in February in Downeast Maine. That area is too sparsely populated to keep the roads well tended during or after snowstorms or drifting snow from high winds.

Once you're north of Portland, I-95 is Maine's only divided highway with two lanes in each direction. I haven't been further than Millinocket, but that's the turnoff for Baxter State Park, if you want to research that area. I got nothin' else for ya, sorry

I have lived in Van Buren @35 miles north of PI all my life , except recently moved to Canada just across the border from Van Buren. Lots of open country ( farm land). The St. John River valley from Van Buren to Fort Kent( @45 north of VB). Is very picturesque. Expect lots of snow and cold weather. You can get nice sunrises & sunsets most everywhere. If you get up to the town St. Agatha overlooking Long Lake very picturesque.
I now live in St. Leonard New Brunswick which is just across the St. John River from VB , I still do most of my photography in the Van Buren area. I only do photography as a hobby so I can cross my equipment back and forth between the borders. Good luck.

Despite its name, Presque Isle isn't anywhere near the ocean

Drive west of PI to Ashland and then south on rt 11. Not a short trip. You may see moose and get a shot of Mt. Katahdin. Katahdin is the start of the Appalachian Trail. Take your long lenses and tripod.

Linda, I hear you about winter driving in Downeast Maine. But you gotta admit, Lubec is a great area to visit. As I'm sure you know, it includes the easternmost point in the contiguous U.S. - West Quoddy Head. It's the place to catch one of the first sights of the sunrise in the U.S. (I used to think it was THE first, but it turns out it's more complicated than that!)

The first location is a sporting goods or outdoor store like REI, LL Bean, Eddie Bauer, etc. If you're spending any time outdoors in that location in winter, you'll need arctic gear.

Lol. I am beginning to wish we were heading south instead. We rented snowmobiles and plan on x country and snowshoeing. Maybe a trip up to the border. This looks like it’s going to be a marathon week of exercise and COLD!

I mainly pointed that out because she is going to northern Maine, and asked for locations that direction. I think Cadillac Mountain receives the first sun rays in the U.S. Anything more complicated is more than I need to know

Cadillac Mountain apparently is first for only part of the year; the rest of the year it's some mountain near the Maine-Canada border. And, West Quoddy is not the easternmost point when you consider the entire U.S., that honor apparently goes to an island in Alaska! 😬 But maybe none of us really needed to know that.....πŸ˜•

Sorry about taking this off-ramp from the thread. I just remember visiting Lubec a few years ago and how much I enjoyed it!
