This is a Beetle Larvae that I found and preserved several months ago. I've learned that by placing them in scalding hot water it kills the bacteria in their gut which keeps them from turning black when preserved.

This is a focus stacked image comprised of 530 images and constant diffused LED lighting.

As always, thanks in advance to all who view and for your comments, suggestions, questions and critique.

Mark, they most likely would taste like chicken..! I've collected a few last year and soon after preserving them they would turn black which I found to be quite strange. I later realized that they have gut bacteria that is used to breakdown their fibrous diet and that the bacteria continued to live after the demise of the larvae. Now I boil a small pot of water and turn the burner off once its starts to boil. I place the larvae in the scalding water for about three minutes and it not only kills the gut bacteria it helps clean them and dissolve any waxy crud that may be on them.

Thanks, Pysanka. I spent most of my summer days fishing in the creek when I was a young lad. I'd dig for worms and from time to time I would find these 'Grub Worms' and I could always count on catching Sunfish with them.

I had no idea that I'd still be digging for them some 60-years later..!
