starting over, Here is the first stage (I am much happier with this one so far). The bottom bird is different than the one from the first attempt - of key importance is that it's background was also blown out, so doing the composite was much easier. I might mess with the feet later to make them look a little more different, but that isn't a bother for now, I want to see if I can get a background in next. And since I have a nice white background, blend-if plus masking will likely do the job.

Anyway - Step 1 - the composite plus white background

thank you Mike - still had lots of trouble with the background, trying to make it feel like the birds belong there - and still some painting on the head feathers will need to happen. Here is the continuation...

A bit too "messy" around the edges for me, Piet. But I love the rest!

thank you Linda - LOL, I can handle that part a lot better than messy around the middle (though I will have to work at combing their hair!!!)

Maybe super-close examination would reveal those issues, but from NVD, they look just fine - and I think it's an excellent contrast to show one sort of ruffled and the other sleek.

I used a mixer brush to brush the hair and now it is not so harsh at 100 percent, will upload later, trying to think of what it needs to be complete.. (I am liking the rough edge this time round - LOL - the eye goes to it, but then bounces back in..)

for good or for bad, they got their haircut - and I felt need some punch and pizazz, so L let the reds play to work with their eyes and claws - might not be to everyone's taste, but it is what the redo ended up at. Much happier with the start, I had better control of the edges (though they still look rougher than I like)

The red is a nice touch! Sounds like you learned a few tips for your future workflows also.

thank you waterman. I go back and forth on it, but I feel like I had much more control this time round - seems like it is always about the edges..

Very good, I like the one with the more color in the background...
