this one isn't as good as the last one and I consider it a failure. I'm not even sure where I went astray, but it is having problems that I just can't recognize (comes form working on an image for more than 45 minutes). Same perch as the last, single bird - composite with itself. I lost control when I tried to get a background into the blown out white, and things just weren't blending right. But practice is practice right?

Failures are allowed and expected!

Well if you are looking for help in confirming this as a failure....I am not your guy. I think the background works very well. I do understand the relationship between getting lost and the amount of time spent searching for the right look, it happens to me a lot!

Yep ... but this ain't one of them.

I think you have yourself a reproducible workflow that would sell.

I think it looks good as it is, but if you want to get really into it, I would use a second background like something with water, woods or smoke. Blend the two backgrounds to come up with your own unique design.

Just goes to show how critical we can be with our own work. I would have said this was more successful than the last, it having more than enough negative space and the under substantial footing of the branch.

The composition is great and the background is nice but, I think the color of the birds is a little off. Snowy Egrets are definitely brilliant white. These look a little drab.

I love the suggestion to change the background to something watery, even perhaps show a shoreline? Nothing distinct, still keep the fantasy. Also I agree with the color of the birds. If you know them to be pure white, the pink grunge is a little off-putting.

The bones you have are great and appealing to many as-is, so the next step - if there is one - is up to you

thanks AFPhoto, it is a strange image in that while I was working on it, there was a moment I really liked it and figured it to be finished. And then I started to dislike it more and more for some reason..

Hi Jack - turning a texture into something that actually resembles something is a dream that I am chasing. I plan to pursue that line for sure!!

hey fergmark. There is much I like about this one. Like you said the composition is interesting, and the composite of the same bird in two poses worked (except for the technical execution on the edges and the colors perhaps) -- I plan to take this one further and fix what I can and then do a Do-Over using two different shots. Negative space is such a funny thing.. it is important, but I tend to want to crop closer so that I have more detail.. I Hate that compromise.

Yep - I think that is the critical thing that needs fixing the most!! I had a version where they were good and white, but they clashed terribly with the background. Still, that is the direction I need to go if this particular image is to be saved.
