strange colour noise and pixelation

I am just trying out various things to try and get used to my new D7000 but I am getting some strange effects that never seemed to happen when I was using my other camera the D5100.

The first photo is under exposed but is it normal to have the strange colour pixelation, should it not just be a dark photo.
And the second and third photo have a lot of coloured noise so I'm starting to get worried that there is a fault wiith the D7000.

I also had some strange sort of pixeled areas on some other photo's I posted a few days ago of the Moon

I wouldn't be too worried about your D7000 based on these images. Even after downloading I was not able to see any strange pixelation or "noise".
I would shoot some more conventional sort of images to form a judgement, Larry. Give your camera another chance.

I had to brighten it quite a bit before anything showed up. Even then, it was just the transition from the black with no data to the somewhat black part closer to the tower.

On the right of the screen, there is something--looks like dust specks.

Yep. Your lens is super dirty.

I think the dust was in the air due to the tower being in a field where they had been turning the hay.
I do have two other photos that turned out better using longer exposure and no flash.

Its just that I had never noticed this effect before when using the D5100 so it just made me curious and I would have thought there would not be a great deal of difference because they have the same sensor.

I think I will have to try an experiment using same settings on both the D7000 and D5100 side by side and see what the results are.

They look like star trails to me.

First pictures: rainy/misty, dusty day, not dirt n lens.
Flash is weak, colors are modified by wetness

(first observations)

Same sensor do not mean same result for different models. Reason? The software used by the manufacturer is different. If you want to by-pass this, shoot RAW (NEF in your case)

Looking at the exif figures, the D5100 exposure was 67 seconds and the D7000 exposure was 275 seconds, although both were shown in the heading as 1 second. This would tie in with the longer star trails and better exposure with the D7000.
What is more surprising is that the much longer exposure gave the sharper picture.

Larry, On your first set of three photos I don't see any thing strange about the first two of them. However on the third photo of that first set I do see what looks, at least to me, it looks like there are some spots just right of the tower about half way up. One of them is white and fairly bright. I think it's a star. the others are quite soft and look like dust spots either on the back of the lens or on the sensor. They also could be mist spots (from surf or fog) on the front of the lens. Now that I think about it, I don't see them on any of the other photos so it's more likely something on the lens that you may have cleaned off rather than something on the sensor. Just my thoughts. ....... Coot
