If you have tried taking pics of kids playing hockey you know the difficulties. Trying to get a decent photo shooting through scuffed and scratched up glass. I've taken thousands of shots of grandchildren with mediocre results at best. However, we have on Long Island an arena that was the Islanders old practice rink. And in the boards there's a removable piece for media folks to shoot through and get decent photos. Well I took advantage of it and had to post the shots I got. Some of the best photos I have ever taken. I have a Canon 80D and these were taken with the Canon 85mm f1.8.

Thanks. It wasn't just a hole in the boards that helped. It's hanging out here at UHH for the past year that helps a lot also.

Nice job!

That 1.8 helps a ton as lighting in rinks is a battle.

Yes, and I just got that lens recently for that purpose and I have a granddaughter in gymnastics. Same problem there also. It's a great lens.

I was a hockey dad for a lot of years and know how difficult photography in an ice rink can be. Great job with these. Rinks that have removable glass or portholes for photographing are a blessing!!

Last weekend I made my first attempt at hockey shots in the OHL league. I was about 15 rows up, center ice. (Sounds great, but seats were not that difficult to get.) I found I could get away with 1/800 sec for shutter. 1/640 was not good at all. I finally settled on 1/1000. To get that, I was at ISO 800. There was a little noise noticeable on the whitest of whites which was easily corrected. The noise on the darks didn't seem to affect the images that much.
The rink does have the photo lens access hols cut in. I may have to see if I can get a seat behind one.

Would be interesting in the settings you used.

I have to figure out how to eliminate noise from high ISO's. I took pics last night of an auditorium concert. My ISO was high. 2500-4000. The best I could do with a 1/250 shutter. The pictures were not good. It looks like they are out of focus, but I think it's just noise from the high ISO's. I have a lot to learn yet.

I'm a big fan of the Topaz AI line, and for noise reduction is the AI DeNoise. Does a great job. I also have had good results with Photoshop/Elements ACR (Adobe Camera Raw). There are good videos for both.
