I just received a canon Rebel t7i DSLR, this is my DSLR, and am trying to find out what macro lens will give me what I want. I’m looking to capture the teenie tiny world of insects, flowers, water droplets, and spider webs. The canon ef 100mm f/2.8 L is usm macro lens has been suggested to me. Also the brands Sigma & Tamron have been mentioned. Help...LoL

Tokina 100 macro is an excellent lens for around $300.

Also take a look at Tamron's 90mm f/2.8 SP VC macro (model F017). Tamron's new SP series prime lenses have vibration compensation. They also have a professional build quality with a metal lens barrel and are fully weather sealed. I have their 45mm f/1.8 SP VC lens which is in the same series and have been impressed with it.

I'm drooling over this one, will get you to 1:1 and up to 1.2x with a 25mm extension tube. What is your budget? The 100 gets a good review at a better price, too.

Either of the Canon EF 100mm macros are an excellent choice. The “L” version has a fluorite element(s), has IS (image stabilization) and is typically $200-300 more, BUT Canon USA has the “L” version on sale for $699 ($200 off) - a bargain!

ALL the macro lenses made by everyone today are very GOOD optically - what separates them more is PRICE, focal length, and having stabilization or not (mostly not !) and, auto focus (or not). Today, there are no macro/correct zooms being made - but you can make a pretty good one using a very good zoom ( like the Canon 70-200 f4 L) and use a good close up lens (like the Canon 500D) or a couple of extension tubes or, a Canon tele-extender OR, a combination of these.

I have the non L 100 macro and it is a great lens

When I am photographing bees I wish I had the 180 to give me some more distance from the bees.

I use my Tamron 180 more than my Canon 100. With a 1.4x and on a crop sensor body it give me AOV of a 402 mm and works great for hummers, butterflies etc in my yard.

If you want magnification than the Canon 65 mm f/2.8 goes to 5x. But it is only good for close up macro as it only focus out a few inches from the front element.

Here are the Canon Macro lenses on the Canon Store site. If you check often you might be able to get a Canon macro from the store's refurbished section, same warranty as new.

refurbished lenses (they go in and out of stock randomly so you have to check often)

You'd have to look long and hard to find a "bad" macro prime lens. They are all pretty good. Your most important consideration should be working distance. A photographer shooting stamps or coins on a copy stand needs a short working distance - so a shorter focal length is ideal. Someone looking to shoot insects, flowers, etc would need a greater working distance. I think Canon has a killer macro lens the 60mm F2.8 EF-S, which features fast focusing, small overall size since it is not intended for use with a full frame camera, and excellent sharpness across the frame.

Most other options are for full frame cameras and will be bigger and heavier. If weight and bulk are a consideration, then this is a reasonable choice.

Don't know if they still make it but, didn't Canon have an adjustable macro that went all the way from 1:1- 5:1?

If you can afford the 100mm L version it is an excellent lens. I have it and it does as advertised and is long enough yo be back but not so long as to be too far away. The IS is absolutely necessary for those insect shots where setting up a tripod is out of the question as well as walks where you encounter things by surprise.
Nothing else comes close for quality if you can afford it.
If not most other macro lenses are in a similar class among themselves and hard to go wrong with any of them.

I have been a professional photographer for over 40 years, it has been my experience over over 55 years in photography that Canon lenses take better images, are manufactured to higher tolerances, are better designed, will sell much higher used, than third party glass. Your choice, you can pay me now, or be disappointed later.
