Just a quick question...should I purchase cheaper lens hoods from Amazon or buy the Nikon brand name? Just want them for my lens to block some stray light from some of my photos... Thanks for your input.

Lens hoods from Amazon or other reputable dealers all do what they are supposed to do, block light from hitting the lens.

Sometimes "Off-Brand" Lens hoods do no fit properly on your Lens. Although a "Nikon" or "Canon" lens hood will most likely cost more new, but less if bought used on eBay or another site.

Agreed. I've bought some third-party hoods and the results have been hit or miss. SOmetimes they fit and work well, but often they don't

Never had any issues with a screw mount lens hood.

The main issue besides fit is the size/shape of the hood.

If it's a petal shaped hood, you want to go with one specifically designed for that lens. The petal shaped design blocks as much light as possible from entering from outside the frame without causing darkening in the corners. I made this sketch once for an article in my camera club's newsletter. This is how the shape correlates to the shape of the sensor.

If you want to sell your lens, buy the Nikon. If you do not have plans of ever selling the lens, buy the cheapo.

I’ve found that lens hoods are often shaped differently depending on the lens. Some with petals, some just tube-like, even square. So if you’re going to buy off brand check what shape it should be.

All my Nikon lenses came with a hood. Olympus usually do not. I have purchases 3rd party replicas of these hoods as well as used ones from KEH all work just fine. Mine look just like the ones that can be purchased from Olympus only the printing on the lens is different.

Or just buy a new cheap rubber lens hood every few years, as soon as it begins to disintegrate. Whichever approach is most cost effective.

All my Canon lenses came with hoods. Had the hood on my 70-200 knocked off when shooting semi-pro football in Brooklyn. Checked with Canon ET-87 $95 on sale for only $76. Check on Amazon prices range from $12 and up.
I would go with Amazon for sure $$$$$$$$ not that critical for me. I would go for the medium priced Lens Hood.
