I really like how unlimited Amazon Prime Photo storage works. Good organization and pretty quick assuming one has a fast wifi. Q is this. I may want to delete photos on my 3TB internal drive for space reasons but would just as soon not delete many of them from Amazon. My experience is that the synch of such services goes two ways. Yours?

I Just found out about Prime Photo today. Its awesome ! (Started a new thread about it too)

Anyhow, I would THINK you can NOT SYNC, and just do a "backup" and you'll be able to keep your photo on the cloud, but not on your local HDD. The Backup will skip any duplicates.

Unless you’re using a backup, or mirroring application or syncing (and just copying images manually), no need to worry.

Hard drives are cheap - it's usually a good idea to have local storage and a cloud backup.

I have found that Amazon Prime does not recognize duplicates. I have double or even triple of many photos that I backed up from multiple devices. It’s not a huge issue for me as I only use amazon as my 3rd level backup. I have not tested the sync in question after photos are deleted from local devices. But I would not make an assumption about this.

Best way, in my opinion. I have redundant external backups of my 3 internal drives, one for photos, one for the OS and one for data, using Acronis.
I'm with you, Bill!

Mark - I love Acronis. In addition to backing up, I cloned a new SSD hard drive for my desktop, and it couldn't have been easier. Used the software, popped the old HD out, and put the new one - booted right up, and everything was where it was supposed to be.

I've done that a few times. I had a 240GB SSD as my OS drive. I wanted additional space, bought a 1 TB Samsung EVO SSD and installed it in place of the 240 GB one. I've also recovered backups a few times. Works like a charm. I've been using Acronis for 15+ years. "Would not leave home without it". Their tech support is also excellent.

You're absolutely right. I misinterpreted the Amazon "manage your storage" page.

Copied from Amazon:
What Is Amazon Photos?
Amazon Photos is a secure online storage service for your photos and videos.

Every Amazon customer gets 5 GB of free storage to save, share, and access their photos on desktop, mobile, and tablet.

Amazon Prime members receive unlimited photo storage. They also receive enhanced search and organization features. Using the Family Vault, they can invite up to five members to receive unlimited photo storage, and collect photos together.

If you need more storage, Amazon Photos offers a selection of annual storage plans. View all available storage plans and prices from the Manage Storage page.

Note: Amazon Photos is for your personal, non-commercial use only. You cannot use it with a professional photography business or other commercial service.

Chadp,

I've noticed that to some extent. In some cases, I now have 3 or 4 duplicates of the same filename. I Dumped my images from a laptop, a desktop, and my cell phone. I'm pretty sure some pics on my Laptop & my desktop are duplicates. I made the assumption their software would weed out the duplicates, and it doesn't. Its kind of strange, but oh well, I can deal with it. Its better than nothing. I guess if I were to restore the files, they'd go back from where they initially came.

An Amazon member gets 5 GB of storage. An Amazon Prime member gets unlimited storage and additional features.
