I know it's been mentioned by others on here (that's how I learned about it), but I thought it was so important that it deserved a separate thread.
If you're using a Nikon DSLR, you need to read Steve Perry's "Secrets to the Nikon Autofocus System." Here's a link:
https://bcgwebstore.com/product/secrets-to-the-nikon-autofocus-system/I'm a new Nikon D850 user (and relatively new to DSLRs in general), but I feel confident in saying that if you're using a Nikon DSLR (any model) and have not read Steve Perry's book, you're probably not getting all that you can be, or should be, getting out of your camera.
Perry's book is clear and well written, and it includes lots of practical advice that goes well beyond the owners manual (or other books that I have seen to this point).
It's only $20 bucks . . . you won't regret it.

Agreed, bought it a few years ago, in my often less than humble opinion, the most comprehensive book on the subject out there.
Thanks to Steve Perry for doing such an incredible job, and yes, I also suggest it every time I get a chance
Steve's other book, Secrets to Exposure and Metering for Nikon, is also a must read for all Nikon DSLR users. Everyone, from beginners to pros, can benefit from reading his books. The best thing though is once you buy either book you get updated versions of that book for free! You can't beat that. Thanks Steve.

You might also want to check out Steve's "Secrets to Stunning Wildlife Photography". It's also great.

What does it cover that the manual doesn’t?

I would be thrilled to purchase Steve's books if they were printed books instead of ebooks. I don't enjoy reading books on a device especially if I'm not paying attention to the battery life and it dies right at the best part. Not to mention I can't make notes in the margins. I know these books are going to be loaded with info I and that I will probably give in one day and purchase them but I have yet to read several other photo ebooks I purchased years ago. I understand that paper printing is much more expensive but a lot of books give you the option of paper or ebook.
JUST MY OPINION

The manual tells you what, Steve’s book tells you what, how, why and when.

The Df manual, at least, also tells how, but I can see where some might not be able figure out the why and when. One of these days I may borrow an autofocus lens and do some experimenting.

I think a lot of the manuals contain a ton of information, but books like Steve Perry’s take that information and tell the user what to do with that information.

Exactly right -- well stated.
Steve's books, all of them, take you beyond telling you "how to" and teach you to THINK and do it with a style that will help you remember. A great resource.
