I just shoot 'em............

Hard to tell what I did here as I misplaced my notes...........a good guess would be using a Nikon 50mm f/2.8N Enlargement lens(reversed) with a bellows on my Canon 5d3 with 3 off camera flashes. Probably selected 40-45 images to stack(Zerene) then used pscc to clean.

👍 Its a long horn beetle. Specifically the spined oak borer. Even their knees can hurt you.

Nice, clear shot. There are also spikes on wingtips. A good field mark.
Mark, your turn for first.
I found it under Romaleum rufulum.
Knowing you use Bug Guide I looked. There it is Elaphidion rufulum. My field books,Dillon and Dillon, are a '61 copyright, so understandable.
Emerges from firelogs in the house. I got many that way.
Feeds on many trees in the beech family, (Fagaceae).

Thanks for the ID......I've tried to use different methods to ID but all I accomplished with my effort was to give myself a headache........

Spend a few years with your eyes to a microscope. Study beetle taxonomy. For some unknown reason what I learned, I remembered.
Binomial keys and the interpretation of has it's own language, based on Latin. That must be learned or you are spending your time with a dictionary. de la Torre Buono's Entomological Dictionary, for instance. Like George Harrison said "It Don't Come Easy".
Thanks for this chance to get on a soap box.

In fact, it looks as you have chosen a bit of this insect as an avatar.
Good choice, if so.

True......same bug but different setup in capturing the image. Used a 10x finite objective attached to a cone and bellows.......

You seem to appreciate knowledge.
So, to be picky, the word specie should be species. Specie is coin, money.

Was married to a third grade teacher. I gained a PhD in picky.
The proof reading, I got that on my own.
