When I first found this critter I thought to myself, "What the hell is this?" I've since discovered through this forum that this is a weevil. Coolest looking little dude, don't you think?
Nice set, Bill. I wouldn't call him cute, though.
A nice find! This is an acorn weevil. Like all weevils their tiny mouth is at the end of their snout.
I have not see one of these for many years, and I would very much like to!

Nice captures. I see many weevils down here in the South... I was lucky enough to capture a Weevil"s metamorphosis...

How cool Scott! How long did the process take?

A few weeks all told IIRC. The first image was on April 1st and the last on April 18th. I initially thought it was a caterpillar on the road when I spotted it. I kept it to note it changes.
What a marvelous find and a 5-star job of capturing it on camera. I've seen countless acorns with their tiny borehole in them however I have yet to see one of these beauties so thanks for sharing yours.

A bit of FYI.
The tiny holes Gary mentions are chewed into the acorn. Then the female lays a tiny egg in the hole.
To collect these and many more species of weevils, collect the acorns with holes (most of them) and keep a few dozen in a pint Mason jar, loose, upside down seal to allow air.
Keep in a cool place and check regularly.
If two alike emerge at the same time, keep only the lesser of the two weevils.
Bill
