Safety and where it is safer to be.

American in Chicago over 424 murders in 2019
American in Baltimore over 300 murders in 2019
American in Detroit over 260 murders in 2019
American in Los Angeles County over 500 murders in 2019
American Soldier in Afghanistan 20 deaths in 2019

Safer to be a soldier in Afghanistan than an American in these communities here in the USA.
I saw this Afghanistan figure and found it to be quite interesting and decided to see how the death rate in combat compared to being in the cities mentioned.

Ahhh, not so fast. As a percent of the population, the numbers paint a different picture.

Murders per 100,000 people:

Chicago: = 15.7 (424/2.7M)
Baltimore = 49 (300/609K)
Detroit = 6.1 (260/4.3M)
LA County = 5 (500/10.1M)
Afghanistan = 154 (20/13K)

Using your numbers, your risk of dying is Afghanistan is 30 times that of LA County. The next highest risk is Baltimore which is 10 times that of LA County. In this list, LA County is the safest and, amazingly, Detroit isn't much more dangerous than LA Country regarding murders (who would have guessed).

Just another perspective.

Everyone of those cities/counties have 2.8 to over 12 million population in their metro area. The great majority of those murders are gang members and drug dealers killing each other. US troops in Afghanistan are 13,000 and they live in defended compounds and when they go out they are well armed and can defend themselves or even call in air strikes etc.
Using the deaths per 100,000 (usual one from FBI) the troops in Afghanistan have a 153 per 100,000 death rate. LA County (10,000,000 population) it is 5-6 per 100,000 murder rate. If LA county had the death rate of the troops in Afghanistan there would be over 15,000 murders.
So Afghanistan is not safer than LA, and even Baltimore with a murder rate of 57 per 100,000 is far below the rate in Afghanistan.

What’s interesting is that Baltimore’s murder rate is ~10x that of DC which is just 30 miles away (DC=5.9 per 100,000 and Baltimore is 57 per 100,000). Only St. Louis has a higher murder rate in the US (and New Orleans in number 3). All of the other top 50 cities are either in Mexico (5 of the top 6) or South America.

Oops, my bad. The 2019 population of Detroit (city) is only 655K, not 4.3M (metro Detroit). This is a 41/100K murder rate and that makes Detroit another very dangerous place.

I am taking hard numbers. Not silly percent crap. I am talking a war zone with combat vs the USA where there is NO war whatsoever. I am talking about only US soldiers and NOT all deaths in Afghanistan. In the last year 8,000 plus Afghans were killed. I was very specific and only used Americans in the post. But haters again twist and deflect and come up with really stupid side tracks.

The bottom line, leftist gun controls don't work.

I think there’s more to this than gun control. Economic, social, cultural issues also come into play.

All of the US cities on your list have some of the most restrictive gun control laws in the country. Less "good guys with guns". Now, Afghanistan has a better ratio of "good guys with vs bad guys with". The bad guys know they're not the only ones who can, and will, protect themselves and their compadres.
I may be a little biased on my view since my main wheelhouse is Shooting Sports Photography with my "new" camers crush being the Tactical Games Skirmish here in Texas.

Amen so very true. Along with the murders you get corruption, unbelievable debt and politicians who only care about filling their pockets with cash instead of representing the people. Only way to change them is to vote them out of office and they can collect their 6 figure pensions for the rest of their life. Democrats corruption at its best!!
