Apple Photos has way to work with RAW photos

I have a Nikon D300 and have been having trouble downloading RAW photos for editing. Recently found out - maybe through discussions on UglyHedgehog - that iMacs allow one to upload RAW photos through their own Photos application, the one that comes with Apple Macs. Easy to use and seems to work. Will compare it to Lightroom to see if it works as well and is as easy to use.

You can.

However, the editing tools do not hold a candle to any decent raw converting software.

My favorite raw editors, from a capability perspective, have to be Capture One, On1, Lightroom/ACR, DXO PhotoLab3, in that order. Personally I use Lightroom for 100% of my images, and Capture One Sony Pro - for all my Sony raw files, but only after cataloging my images in Lightroom. On1 is getting better but not quite ready for primetime, and DXO is quite good, and now incorporates control point technology, and fully integrates Nik suite - so it feels like On1, but with better processing tools and a consistent interface.

Easy to learn is usually a marker for inflexible, and limited options when processing images. Full featured raw converters are not nearly as complex as raster editors like Photoshop.

I use the Apple Photos app mainly for pics taken with my IPhone. Also my daughter frequently attaches photos of our grandkids in Message and I can immediately send them to Photos
Since these are all in JPEG it is a convenient way of organizing.

I use lightroom first and then transfer into Photos as jpegs.I can then enter nik software directly from photos if I want to.Photos is pretty good for tweeking...especially like the brilliance slider which seems to make mine jump out a bit more.

I now use Apple Photos. I like it because I can use plug-ins and extensions for editing seamlessly.
I use Affinity Photo for RAW and others, Luminar 4, Nik software, Photo Lemur, and PTLens ALL from within Photos. I shoot mostly landscape and do not need a lot of PP. Also do not need #@$% subscriptions.

I also like to use the brilliance slider for the same reason.
