There are several photographers who consistently post photo’s that I find remarkable. These are photo’s I would love to have hanging on my walls. What are thoughts about using fellow UHH photo’s for personal display in my home—not for pecuniary gain, just for my enjoyment. And, given that, modifying them minimally, i.e., perhaps going from color to monochrome.

Don't ask, don't tell?

EDIT - apparently, some didn't take this as a joke:

I WAS JOKING.....except....if you don't tell, who will know? It's simply an issue between you and your conscience. See my next comment further along in this thread.

Another reason why members should resize their images ....

Recommended resizing parameters for digital images

The ethical thing to do is ask permission, and abide by what the photographer says.

Alan, the fact that you're asking for opinions suggests you might not be fully comfortable with the idea. We all set our own moral boundaries, whether it be cheating on taxes, alerting a cashier that we received too much change, leaving a note on a car we backed into, or hanging a photo that belongs to someone else (edited or not) without their permission.

I feel it would be much the same as when people were downloading music without paying. With that said, I guess if the person who owns the photo grants permission for download or copy it would be ok. Many people would greatly appreciate learning you enjoyed their art to the degree that you would like to hang it in your own home, but once they permit reprinting they lose control of how many time, by who and location of use.
Just my two cents

Why not just ask the owner?

Alan, I would be honored if someone found one of my images worth printing and hanging and would have no problem with it. I always ask before using someone's photo.

What about photos that have watermarks on them?

Alan,

I have no problems and would be honored with you using any of my photos that I have posted here as long as you give the appropriate credit if ever asked about a given photo. Additionally, I offer to provide you with the larger file size should you want it for any photo that I have posted here since files here have been downsized. You may make your request via a private message here or through the contact form on my website.

I'd like to point out that copyright is not the only way to control the use of a photo.

Flickr uses Creative Commons, a way to reserve some rights to the photo and allow other rights to be used by others. For example most of my photos on flickr have a creative commons license level of "attribution", which means anyone can use the photo for personal use, and they can also use it for commercial use as long as I am given credit for the photo. Derivative works are permitted. Creative Commons licenses are not required for posting on flickr, so you can use other forms of restriction.

Check out https://creativecommons.org/licenses/

I do not take photos for the purpose of making money from them or keeping them hidden away for only myself and my family or specified individuals. Some specialized images may be restricted for personal reasons but most of the photos are available to others for use under the CC license. I do not expect compensation for their use.

If someone has poor enough taste to want to hang one of my photos on their wall, go right ahead. If someone uses one of my photos to make themselves some money, that's fine with me. It shows a level of expertise that I did not want to develop.

If I post a photo on a website (UHH or any other) it is available for the public to see. There is no practical way to ensure that someone cannot capture that image and re-use it in some way. I have to give up expectations of privacy for any photo I post publicly. If I don't want an image to be used by others, I won't post it. So if you have a hankerin' to use any image I post on UHH, knock yourself out.

That is an outlook that must make online sharing a lot more fun.

In early 2014 there was a UHH user, jfantasma, who posted photos from fourteen of us UHH members to Fine Art America for sale! I believe that discovery is somewhere in the 34 pages of this topic, after the initial Facebook sighting.

There have been other instances we discovered, and no doubt thousands we haven't.

With the jfantasma incident, I was very upset. But I've come to feel as you do. Since I've never attempted to sell my images, let alone earn a living doing so, let 'em take any they want

I don't know if it's more fun, but it's less worry.

You know, free of "worry" is what I wrote first. I'm going to have to stop editing my postings
