I removed the PNY Optima 2GB memory card from my Canon Powershot ELPH 100HS to insert an old 64MB Kodak Digital Film SD card for just a few shots. When I reinserted the PNY card it was locked in the lock position. Cant't view any photos, can't unlock it, little lever works but still locked up. Bought a new memory card (not a PNY) - little camera works ok. Can anyone help? Thanks

So the little switch on the card works, but the camera says it's locked? It sounds like the switch isn't doing what it's supposed to do. Care to take a peek inside the card?

Is the act of inserting the card moving the little switch?

Can you read it in a PC with an SD slot?

The "Lock" switch on some cards is very loose and if the card happens to get inserted with that side just a TINY bit too close to the edge of the camera it can get bumped to the "Lock" position. I have had several that have gotten too loose, so I throw them away and get new ones, not worth the hassle.

This is exactly why I never remove the card from the camera, I know it is not popular belief, I never reformat unless the card becomes corrupt. I download the pics to my computer daily via USB cable. Then delete the images from the camera.

The only exception is if I am on a shoot and the card is full.

Same here. I also worry about the pins, dust etc.

Fun with punctuation:

Cameras like computers, hate their owners or,

Cameras, like computers, hate their owners.

It's a conspiracy !

It's a happening!

It's a movement!

(Hats off to Alice)

Ugly Jake,
So that's why my camera gets mad when I set it down near my computer.

I agree. That is only time I remove mine. I use a four or eight mb. cards and that is the only time I change them.
All my downloading is set use Canon Utilities and I also shoot in raw so it works good for me. I do not let any one take my cards and put it their pc. I even have one sixteen mb. card I use if I think I will need it. I do all down loading using the usb cable. Works good for me.

Old Timer (like me), let's hope you're really meaning GB cards... LOL

I shoot an average of 300-500 shots per day, sometimes double and triple that. Always remove my card from the camera and download directly through the computer slot (8g Gb Memory Stick Pro) After downloading I always re-format, not just an erase. Erasing can and will leave artifacts on the card that may eventually transfer to new photos.
Never once had a problem doing it this way

I have internet security software that allows me to do a "secure erase", which (they claim) doesn't leave anything recoverable. I'm not so sure that reformatting will remove all artifacts - my understanding is that it merely frees up disk space and removes the file history from the drive/card etc. Feel free to correct me if that is wrong.

Yes, sorry but that is incorrect. Erasing only removes the file address. Formatting scrubs the entire drive completely clean of all previous data.
