I only shoot RAW.
I needed an image for the Christmas letter. It will be printed on plain paper. I needed to be in the picture with my best companions. We decided it needed some color, the dog and the name of our new "retirement resort" community. Best light was going to be grey skies. Family portraits are not my strong suit. Smiles, shadows and eyes are always wrong.
I didn't want to fiddle with a remote and failed to recruit a shooter.
My solution was to tripod mount my Olympus TG-5, select full Auto and shoot 4K video. I shot a 55 second video clip which means I have 1650 frames to pick from. Each is 8 megapixels.
I used Lightroom Classic to review, select a frame, do some cropping, adjust the (gray) sky a little and other minor adjustments.
This is not a "Wall Hanger". The final print will be about 2"x2" followed by the typical "this is what we did last year" story. The sculpture is by Dale Chihuly.
Would it have been better if I stuck to the "I only shoot RAW" rule?
Well done, Merry Christmas.
Nice shot, there is nothing wrong with auto however, I would not have thought to do it in video. Great result.
That's a great pic. It's interesting as to how you did it.

Since you are going to print this image plain paper I really doubt that taking a raw image would have made any difference at all. In fact in some special cases I have found that taking a 4K video and then stacking the frames produces are far better image than any type of single frame shot. An example of this is when using very long focal lens as this can average out atmospheric turbulence for shots of the planets. This is link from one of my ugly hedgehog posts is example of this technique.

Oh my goodness!!! You are not going to be on Santa’s “good” list if you shoot in anything but Raw!
Nice shot and wishing you both a very Merry Christmas!

Way to cold here now to shoot raw.....:)
As a 2x2 it should look OK. If the camera has one, I would learn about how to use a self timer.

Howard,
All my (3) cameras have a self timer. They have phone app remotes too. Walking to the tripod, pressing the button, waiting 10 seconds, walking back to the join DW and the dog, walking back to the camera and reviewing the image would take too long for single images. It is all we had with film cameras.
My point in this post is that 4K video shoots 30 8 megapixel JPEG (equivalents) every second. Lightroom has the tools to pick good single frames. I think it is an underused technique.
I've got some favorite travel images I've pulled from video too!

Thank you!
I thought my post was about a photo technique. It got moved from "Main Discussion" to "Gallery". What's with that?

I tripped over the video to photo technique several years ago when I captured a granddaughter swinging at a softball. The clip was boring, but the frame with the ball inches from her bat was wonderful.

Thanks. If one of your cameras shoots video, try it. There can be surprise frames in clips!

I checked your topic. Next I'll study it. I never thought of stacking. One of my cameras does still stacking when set on "intelligent automatic". I'll try video.
