I, like some, am an "OLD DOG" that resists new tricks!
But...upon receiving my D750 several months ago, I decided to set BBF up on my new "Doll Baby".
I decided to give this new (to me) concept a fair shake try for two weeks.
Admittedly, at first it was distracting to me as I was used to the old way of focusing.
But after a week, I knew I was hooked on this "NEW TRICK"!
If you haven't yet tried this, I suggest that you do.
I love this new trick, and will never go back!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Just had to say that!
Thanks,
Boone.
Yep. It's the only way to go.
I wear glasses and the location of the only button I could set on my T3i caused thumb knuckle prints on my right eyeglass lens; had to quit using
Many, like yourself, find it to be the bee's knees!

LOL, no. My grandma told me
I have an alternative trick for you to try. Set the shutter at the default to activate auto focus as usual, but set the af-on button to instead turn autofocus off. Now to freeze focus you press af-on under your thumb, and you also get manual focus in servo mode.

Hah! Thank you for that vindication. I tried it quite a while back and I, who also wears glasses, had a similar issue. My claim to fame was constantly knocking my glasses out of whack. Good to know I’m not the only one.
I've used BBF so much on my D500 that I need to get it repaired! I've also worn out the wording on my D800 AF-ON button using it.

Think on this, concerning old dogs and the
supposed newness of the trick ....
It's nothing new to separate focus from
shutter release. It was thus for a century,
until the intro of AF.
So you now use, instead of a focus ring
on the lens, a button on the camera body.
The automating of judging "in-focus" is
now relegated to AF sensors instead of
your eye, but that is a different issue.
BTW, on my 750 I use FBF, not BBF. I use
the upper button between the mirror box
and the grip.
I love new technology and just had to try it when I first heard of it. Quickly found two major drawbacks - it only works with autofocus lenses, and defeats the purpose of shooting on a tripod. My hat’s off to those who find it useful, though.
BBF is what I've been using for years. Too many advantages not too.
My problem is, when someone hands me their camera and I naturally try to BBF and the damned thing wont focus.
I like many use BBF. While at the NY Photo Plus show, I wanted to try out some cameras and lenses. I was ready to tell the Rep that the camera wouldn’t focus. Than I reminded I was using BBF. Muscle memory had kicked in. 😀
