I've been using their photo editing software since they were named MacPhun and were still selling Creative Kit (a suite of interlocking photo processing apps) before they became Skylum. I started with the now defunct iPhoto then "upgraded?" to it's replacement app (Photos). I converted my iPhoto pics to the new
photos format and have them now in my photos library. I have imported the pictures from my camera directly into my Mac via USB cable using the Photos app library. Then post processing using a combination of Photos and MacPhun/Skylum plugins. I was happy with that arrangement and used Photos for my library structure. Two days ago, I bought Luminar 4. It took me a while to determine that I didn't know how to install Luminar 4 as a plugin to photos. Luminar, Luminar 2018, Luminar 3 all installed as plugins quite readily.
Question No. 1 Can I use Luminar 4 from within Photos as a plug in? I cannot get Photos to recognize Luminar 4 Even the System Preferences extensions do not list Luminar 4 as an extension recognized by my OS (10.13.6 High Sierra)

If I must abandon Photos and Photos Library, then I'd need to transfer all my photos library (about 30,000 images) into a Luminar 4 library. So far I've only manageed to get a few individual pictures into L4 but it was such a fumbly/jumbly affair that I really don't know which button click(s) or keystroke(s) actually worked.
Question No. 2 How do I load my photos from photos library into my Luminar 4 library so that I can access them and work with them. I know that they will be jpegs, not the original Arw (Sony Raw). I'll just have to live with the flipping of viewing/storing formats- I guess

In the past, I've downloaded new photos from my cameras into my Mac via USB cable directly into photos library
Question No. 3 How do I download directly via USB from my cameras into the Luminar Library

If I cannot get a photo into the software, then the software is useless to me. Otherssseem to have no problems getting their pics into the luminar 4 library. I't must be me?

After reading your post, I decided to check my own computer MacBook Pro Mid 2015 OS 10.14 Majave. I opened photos selected a picture and hit edit then hit the extension button and there it was Luminar 4. Also it automatically installed into Lightroom 6.14. If you still have the installer from Skylum then I would reinstall Luminar 4 again. According to Skylum minimum requirements are early 2010 mac 8 gigs of ram and OS 10.12 Sierra. In my opinion 8 gigs of ram the thing would really crawl. I recommend a solid state drive (SSD) and 16 gigs of ram for better performance. Crucial can help you with the SSD and RAM. If you haven’t already upgraded your mac. Good luck.

Thanks! I've been unable to find either email or phone for skylum support. That makes me wonder if my mid 2010 iMac is too old or if I'm maxing out Photos with too many software extensions leaving no room for another to be added

Luminar 4 works great as a plug-in for Lightroom and Photoshop in Windows 10 so I'm sure it will work with Mac products since Macphun seems to put the majority of their efforts into Mac products.

I have a 2014 mbp and 2015 27” iMac.

In order for lumina 4 library to add pictures stored in “Photos” using add folders function. do the followings as Skylum support told me.

Open finder to see pictures folder , click “pictures”. Under picture you will see “Photos Library” then right click “Photos Library” to open dialogue. Thank click “show package content”. You will see a folder named “original” drag this folder to the left column under “my Favorites”

Next time when you open Lumina 4, go to library/add folder then adding this “original” folder.

All your pictures in “Photos” will appear in Lumina library. For me every picture showed up twice one in jpgs and one in heir(Apple’s file). Raw file only showed up once.

May take awhile to get all in Lumina 4. The Lumina 4 library keeps the “photos” structure - by date which I really like .

I am running Catalina with no issues so far. Also I have no problem running Lumina 4 as “Photos” plug in but this way you edit one file at a time and the edited file still stored in Lumina library.

Cheers

Just for general information, I use Affinity Photo and Luminar 4 works well as a plug-in. The only small problem I encounter is when I return to the host app from L4. The process is slow and sometimes requires some clicking to nudge it along. But the final results are very good.

Interesting post.
When dragging the “original folder” from package contents to Luminar 4, is a copy made? If not, does one need to keep a copy of “original folder” in package contents or will a new “original folder” be generated when new photos are taken?

I printed out your recipes for loading pics into luminar 4 from my photos Library so I could follow it exactly without risk of losing the screen image that contained your instructions. I followed along and everything went perfectly UNTIL I got to "you will see a folder named "original", Drag this folder to the left column under"my favorites" The closest file name that I found was an alias named "original photos" Since here was no left column and no "My favorites to drag the folder to I dragged it out onto my desktop renamed it "Photo's Library" and attempted to add it to Luminar 4 from there. Alas, when I attempted to import the data into a new folder in Luminar 4 library (catalogue?) the only thing that loaded was my screensaver folder contents. The photos that were in the Photos Library folder were not recognized by luminar 4. With your help. I feel that I'm one step closer to being able to load my pics into Luminar 4 library but I'm definitely not there yet.
Thanks for trying to help. I know that there are lots of good folk on UHH and you should count yourself among them

I just started with Luminar 4 today and it had me for a couple of hours and now it is purring. I have over 227,000 pics on a 8 TB hard rive and it is loading and cataloguing them all now. It will take a while but seems to be going fine and the way the program works seems unbelievable to me.

Followed the above directions and made the following adjustments to make it work:
1] when PHOTOS opened I saw "Masters" folder. This contained my images in sub-folders by year.
2] I dragged the Masters folder to the column under Favorites (in Finder)
3] I then opened L4, clicked + folders and in less than 15 minutes 12,000 images were in L4

I hope this helps
