My answer would be D7000; D7100; D7200; and now D7500. Or a D500, depending on how you define step up.

Hi,
I went with a D7200 and never looked back. The newer D7500 does not have two memory card slots and I like to use the second for back up or raw images.

After that is the D5 of course. But I think I'd rather have two 850s than one D5 at the same price.

Me too!
Keep a 128 in slot A, and a 32 in slot B, both high write and read speed.
Love my d7200, but still occasionally use my d7000.

I am glad others added the D5 and the D850. Both are super cameras. The D5 is about to be replaced with the D6, so if these top of the line bodies are on your list, add the D 6. .

Since the 7000 is a crop sensor, I would go with the D500. It’s the best crop sensor available and you will not have to worry about another upgrade.

I upgraded from a D7000 to a D500. The D500, a crop sensor camera like the D7000, uses all of my D7000 lenses and is the BEST crop sensor camera made by any company. I saved $$ buying a used one in excellent condition from mpb.
