No picture here... but my question is for this section.

When posting a pic... we have to option to click on 'download', which most of us do. The result is superior than when not done.

My question is... since it renders a superior image... why not have 'download' automatically part of the posting process for all postings? Or is there something that escapes me?

Barry

It takes a lot more storage space for the full download than just the display image. More space means higher cost to run this forum.

They (UHH) request that large files only be done when necessary. (Using "Store Original".)
I reduce the size of mine for that reason. Larger than the thumbnail image, but doesn't use a lot of space.

Yep, no use having a file larger than the screen resolution, although generally I’ll use 1400 pixels for the horizontal resolution because that’s what the competition sites I upload to ask for.

From the Photo Section (mostly ignored) rules.

"- Maximum dimensions for images are 600x800. So if you want to post a crop and be assured that it doesn't get reduced, then resize it on your end down to at most 600 pixels in width. Images with dimensions of 600x800 or less aren't modified during the upload process.

- "Store original" checkbox, if enabled, results in the original file you are uploading to be hosted alongside the downsized image. Please only enable it for panoramas or when you absolutely need to show a high resolution image. You can see the original file by using "Download" link shown below the downsized image."

Simple reason that has nothing to do with the board itself...

To post an original is a matter of choice. That's it.

Not everyone wants to post a full image online especially in unprotected forum as they can be downloaded and reused w/o authorisation.

Totally ignoring all of the actual fact based responses already posted. If you’re worried about others stealing your work, (you shouldn’t), you can always watermark it.

As someone who has had their work stolen and printed on t-shirts, even though it was low res, it is a fact that some of us don't want to post hi-res images for that reason. And watermarks can be removed.

That wasn’t the question. The OP asked why the download wasn’t automatically part of the posting process.

And one of the answers is that not everyone wants people to be able to download their photos, if they are worried about them being stolen.

I seriously doubt that was the concern of the software designer.

The download option only appears if the person that uploaded the picture clicks on "Store the Original"
If this option is clicked, then actual picture size uploaded will be stored (up to 20megs I believe). Then when the viewer chooses "download" the full picture will be displayed.

It should be noted that the term "download" is misleading, all images are "downloaded" to your computer, that's how they are viewed on your monitor. They are downloaded to your PC into the browsers cache or a temp directory and the PC sends the data to your monitor. The word "Large View" would be much better term than "Download"

Also note, when you upload a photo, and you want the viewers to see larger than the default 600x800 pic, you should resize the photo first, to something reasonable. 1920x1080 or 1200 x 800 are good choices. 1920 is the standard HD size of most TV's, Cell phones and many monitors. 1200 I think (from memory) is the default view of the Hogs first click on download. The second click will show what ever was uploaded with "store original".

If you don't resize your photo, you could be uploading really, really large photo's which fill up the server, and makes it possible, (though highly unlikely) that someone will steal your masterpiece for some reason.
Really large photos should only be uploaded if you have a good reason, for example, in the Post Processing session you may want others to do post work on your photo.

I would think really large photo's will eventually be deleted from the server. Not sure how long photo's are stored, but if it were me, I would do a scan for all files over a certain size and time and access date, and delete them.

From the Photo Section (mostly ignored) rules. br ... (show quote)

There may be a few of us who understand the backroom organization and workings of this forum but I'm certainly not one of them. I vaguely recall reading these "rules" when I originally signed up and them promptly ignored them completely. I've received no messages from anyone or anything asking me to change my ways. So I always check "store original" because I want anyone with any interest at all in my modest photo work to have an easy time reproducing it for their own use. I'm guessing the number of photographers on UHH actually making significant money selling their work on a regular basis are few and far between. When members express concern about their work being stolen I almost always go the photo gallery to see their work. Nine times out of ten I'm left wondering why anybody would want to steal it (my work included in that thought).

You are correct. If you look at older threads images have been deleted, even the thumbnails!!!
