Considering buying a D500 while it’s on sale. The last time I bought a new Nikon body on sale, within 3 months a newer model was introduced. So I am skeptical. I would welcome and appreciate your thoughts on whether Nikon might introduce a new DX flagship soon or if they are putting their advances into mirrorless. Have a nice selection of DX lenses so I am not going to go FX or mirrorless at this point. Thanks and have a great Thanksgiving. V

I doubt they will go for a flagship replacement but I am having the exact same thoughts. Even if they do introduce a new model, you would still have an outstanding camera! My nickle is still in the air!

The D500 was Nikon's replacement for the D300 and it took them about 10 years to come out with it! With the new investment in mirrorless technology I seriously doubt they are going to come out with a replacement for the D500 anytime soon, just my opinion though.

I have a D500 and think it's the best crop sensor camera out there right now. Its auto focus system is superlative and low light capability among the best amongst crop sensor cameras.

I think that it is past the season for Nikon to release a new camera for this year. Usually you start hearing roomers in early summer an if it happens it seems to me it happens around October. I for one was in the same pickle you are in. I was looking to upgrade to the Nikon D850. It's been out a year, it is now going on sale and you are thinking well all the sign show a new camera is on the way. Well I was sitting on the money to pay for it, been sitting on it for over a year, been looking at it before it even released for sale. finally this month it came down to that's the camera I want, and I Got it. NOT looking back, IT IS A GREAT CAMERA and it does an Awsome job. I glad I say to hell with waiting for the next great thing this is what I want. If you need a new camera, if you just want to jump to what you like that is out there now. go for it. The next one will have more bells and whistles, but will you really need them or even use them to take the great pictures you want to take?

I have and still occasionally use a D300 and D300s, but after moving to a D810 and D850, found that I wanted better consistency of operation on those occasions when I just didn't need 40 MP images or the other benefits of a full frame camera. So I bought a D500. It is almost identical in operation to the D850, and as I've said here in other discussions, it renders images that are essentially identical in character to the D850.

While it is certainly a four year old model, I've found absolutely no shortcomings that relate to the age of its design. It is a wonderful all around camera. You will read comments here about shortcomings in low light / high ISO situations, but based on my experience, those seem to come from people who haven't learned how to set up and use the camera properly. I am extremely doubtful that I'd have any reason to move to anything like a D570 or whatever Nikon would call a new model.

The truth is that digital cameras right now (especially the higher end models) are at an extremely advanced stage of both design and execution. There really aren't a whole lot of places for them to go that would really mean very much. That's why we face all of the marketing hype around the mirrorless models. They offer a couple of operational alternatives that can be beneficial to some folks, but I've not seen one yet that takes noticeably better pictures in the hands of a knowledgeable operator.

If there is a replacement or upgrade for the D500, it will almost certainly be a very nice camera. It will probably do a couple of things that the D500 doesn't. But it won't render a D500 useless or obsolete, just like my D850 didn't make my D810 useless or obsolete.

D500 is very good camera. Bought it last year during the 'sale' cycle, with free battery grip.
Never looked back.

I love my D500, and I doubt they will upgrade it. If they do, I will still use it as my DX camera and consider a newer full frame one.

I can't speak to the possibility that Nikon will be replacing the D500 any time soon, but I can speak to the outstanding performance of the camera. I have one and I have never regretted my purchase. I also believe that this is the best crop sensor on the market. IMHO.

I think you should go a head and get. It’s definitely a great camera and the price is right. I bought mine last summer and have never been happier with a camera. I knew if I bought a lesser camera I would always regret it. Once again, go a head and get it.

Get it while you can. It is no secret that the D500 is discontinued.
Also it is no secret that there will be no replacement so you will be getting the last of the line.
Though Nikon is coming out with a FF mirrorless pro model and already announced APSC format mirrorless that will soon be the D500 replacement.
So if you want a mirror slapper get the D500 as it still is a pretty good but old camera.

Well, you may be in the same boat again. The D500 was released in April of 2016. You can always wait until the next model is released, or buy it now and enjoy it. As far as a timetable for new model releases, no one here is likely to be able provide anything other than a wild guess.

Just like with computers and cell phones, it's out of date the minute you leave the store. In my opinion, that should not be a deterrent if you really like the product. This was made light of in an ad years ago when the guy was driving home with the latest computer, only to look up at a billboard showing the new latest computer. Best of luck, no matter your decision.
