We have discovered my problem. To me the taste of food doesn't change because of display; I can't smell glass; Champagne tastes fine from the bottle. I suspect I only perceive one thing at a time. Makes my life simple. And before the next shot, I didn't say it makes ME simple.

I’m with you. The whole experience from pressing the shutter to hanging the print is pleasurable to me.

Thanks to all for the excellent info, I might try one of the Logans with the built in guides.

I have been using Logan for a number of years. Got the larger 450-1 model to cut full matt boards. Very happy with it, particularly for cutting non-standard sized openings....don't crop the image, change the opening!!
I also recommend getting a meter stick. Much easier to split decimal numbers than inch fractions. There are also technical drawing rulers marked in tenths of an inch which should also work.
Remember to change blades often! I am experimenting with re-sharpening on 2000 grit sandpaper....too soon to tell. Anyone doing that?

If you cut your own mats what tools do you use and what is your process?

In school many years ago I cut my own, but the photo/art department had an expensive device that made it easy. Now i see there are mat cutters such as Logan that are not very expensive, are these worthwhile?

Yes. I use a Logan Framer's Edge 650. I cut the mat to fit the frame, then I decide what the window needs to be, then I set the dimensions on the cutter and cut. If I am using a double-thick mat I change the blade.

The Logan Border Calculator app works well - I use it on my iPhone. It's probably available for Android as well.

I started out using the Logan 450. It worked well once I got the hang of it. I used it to mat photos for my camera club competitions which occurred monthly. I would usually mat six to nine photos per month depending on which categories I might be entering.

When I eventually joined the art festival circuit I needed a mat cutter that would allow me to cut mats more quickly but without losing accuracy. I moved up to the Logan 850 which had a much sturdier squaring arm and had a rail mounted cutter with production stops. I would often cut a few hundred mats each month during festival season. It was a great piece of equipment but would be too expensive and more elaborate for those who only need to cut a few mats every once in a while.
