While I resist the "Millennials" and "Yuppies" labels as unsupportable generalizations, I am uncertain that Scruples did anything that warrants the kind of criticism that others do. I am not arguing anything, one way or another. But I do not see the source of the criticism by UHH posters here. The other diners' complaint was about his strobe - and he was apparently not using one. How is he to be criticized for his own attitude? What else is there to argue?

Mirrorless cameras are what I use for such situations. A pancake lens and all in black, camera set to electronic shutter. It’s invisible.

Ok, the other dinners just decided to cause problems. They had nothing better to do.

I understand your concerns. I'm using a Canon 5D Mark IV. I don't believe it has a focus illuminator. But I just started using digital a short time ago. If I am in error, please correct me.

Thanks, Scruples

Happy Shooting

A peculiar thing happened last night. I attended my sister-in-law's fortieth birthday party. It was a nice vegan restaurant in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. We had a great time laughing and chatting amongst ourselves (party of 8). As the photographer I set my camera on Manual, dialed my ISO to 25600 and fired away. Excellent photos of all of us and the restaurant surrounding. Our waiter came over to me. He told me that my flash was disturbing the couple next to us. I paid him no never mind. I kept photographing. A shot while later, a waitress came over and told me my flash was annoying others. I pulled her to the side and showed her my camera. I didn't have a flash. She was confused. Others at our party had their cell phones working in full view. A restaurant manager came over to ask me not to use my flash. I showed him my camera and told him I have been photographing when these kid's grandparents were in diapers. I'm not some ignorant snapchat child !
Any how I enjoyed my meal, took photos of my sister and everyone else at our table and just wondered. Are the Millennials here so self absorbed that they aren't paying attention to anyone but themselves? I felt I was being constantly assaulted because I was using a "camera" and not a cell phone.
Does anyone have their take on this or has anyone experienced a similar scenario?

Happy Shooting!

I've never seen the words "nice" and "vegan" used together like that. I just don't see me ever going there. LOL

Perhaps you would share some of these pictures? I don't think it's a cell phone vs DSLR. Maybe they had legitimate complaints. Just "millennials" complained? I think not caring about your surroundings is also being "self absorbed".

This was a nice Vegan restaurant picked out by my Vegan sister-in-law. I didn't mind going because she is a dear family member. The food was very nice, delicious and in good portions. The neighborhood is Williamsburg Brooklyn. It has been recently gentrified. Most people here are young, educated, middle class. Hence my generalization of "Millenials" and "YUPPIES." The restaurant was not elitist or exclusive. So I'm inclined to believe that it will be somewhat "noisy." The management did mind the party and were quite content that all eight of us enjoyed our meal. (We left a 35% tip on the table).

I am inclined to believe that my "big camera" may have been the cause for concern. Because of this fact, the other diners did not pay attention to others in our party who were using the camera on their cell phones. Sadly, the other diners may have thought this restaurant to be high class and exclusive. It wasn't but was a nice place to go nonetheless.

To presume the restaurant will be quiet and reserved, I believe the restaurant would list itself requiring diners to wear business attire. It did not.

I hope you understand my dismay.

Happy Shooting!

I don't know about the OP camera but my camera doesn't have the AF illuminator. Now that I am thinking about it I think if a camera doesn't have the built in flash it doesn't have the AF Illuminator either.

Good point. Even TTL Flashes use a focus illuminator.

What??? 35% tip. Now I'm putting on the hip waders. Really, a "big camera" would cause concern in Williamsburg. We have been going to Peter Lugers for decades. I know that area, I doubt the size of the camera would be a matter for concern.

Perhaps you are a little paranoid about the camera cell phone thing."constantly assaulted because I was using a camera" see first sentence. If you were approached by three staff members about your actions their requests would appear founded by your actions and the complaints of other customers.. First you complained about "the Millennials" later it became "yuppies".
All in all you behaved badly and were arrogant and rude.. What is a "ignorant snapchat child"?

To me, Millennials and Yuppies are interchangeable for the context of this thread. I understand your suggestion that I behaved badly and portrayed myself as arogant and rude. As for ignorant snapchat child, I mean the teenagers who use their phone camera to photograph everything from the food they ordered to bodily functions and then post it don social media.

But since I behaved in a poor and boorish manner, please enlighten as to how.

Happy Shooting!

The bigger the camera, the more nervous people get. That has been my experience.

Most Vegan restaurants to provide a bare bones experience. That is clearly contrived. The food was tasty, delicious and plentiful.

I thought the Yuppies are in their 50's and 60's now.

You might be correct in some regard. But I will post some photos for proof. The restaurant was particularly frequented by YUPPIES. I can only equate this bad experience with having a large DSLR. I think I'm proficient enough not to need a flash

So why were you in a vegan restaurant if you have such disdain for the clientele? And your DSLR superiority complex is also showing. Those smartphone folks were perfectly happy with their photos, as much as you are with yours.

I am using a Canon 5D Mark IV. As far as I'm aware, there is no focus illumination. If I am wrong please forgive me and correct my mistake promptly. More often than not, cell phones have automatic flash on board. People will use it indiscriminately.
I never really liked using a flash. More often, you get "the winkies, blinkies and nods. ". People will squint in fear of the flash too. Even in a dark venue, flashes can throw off the composition of a photo.
Even using the dreaded green automatic setting can render a photograph much better than with a flash.
It seems these kids (YUPPIES) only think about Themselves. During the party I was conscientious to remain seated at the end of the table. Keep my flash in my bag and clandestinely took photos.
