Scanning 6X6 mounted slides on an Epson V600 flatbed scanner.

Anyone have an idea on how to Scan 6X6 mounted slides on an Epson V600 flatbed scanner. Past experience tells me that not using one of the film holders will not allow the scanner to function properly. The 120 size film holder doesn't have provisions for this size of mounted slide like the 135mm film holder does. Sitting the slide on the film holder brings up a focusing issue because you are sitting on top of the guide rails for the film plus the thickness of the slide mount. I suppose I could remove the slides from the mounts but risk damaging them and introduce a handling/ storage of the slides issue when I've finished

See whether betterscanning.com has an appropriate holder. They make great products.

Try putting the slides on the scanner glass. Then put the 120 film holder on top of them. That seems to work for some Epson scanners.

Be sure to line up the slides so they are centered in the holder’s aperture. You can butt 3-4 together in a column against the stop at the top of the scanner bed.

Do two scans. First scan half of one side, second scan the other half. Merge in PS or other program as panorama. I did a bunch this way and it worked very well.

Its very simple to make your own custom holder that will accommodate mounted 6x6 transparencies. Its as simple as cutting a piece of matt board to the size of the platen, and cutting a two holes in it. One hole that will allow placement of your slide beneath the lamp in the scanner head, and the other slot-like (1" x 3.5") hole along the top edge that allows the lamp in the scanner head and the moving sensor in the bed to communicate. The attached picture shows the set-up I use for 4" x 5" and 5" x 7" films.

Thought about projecting them and taking a picture of the screen image?

It sort of works. But nothing beats a scanner or film duplicator.

Not sure this would work for this scanner. A couple of weeks ago I didn't get the film holder butted up against the side of the glass... upper left corner of the glass. When I tried to run a scan the scanner would throw an error light and shut down. I thought I mat have left it running too long or something but when I found the holder maligned and put it in place everything was well

I have scanned many 120 mounted slides with my V600. I simply apply a strip of frog tape to the screen at the far right of the scanning track (to keep it located and square), and simply bump the slide up to the tape. Scanning in Professional mode and selecting the exact area to scan.
I use this same method to scan 120 film uncounted when I, or a customer, wants the film onfo data scanned with the image, it works great.

Well, I can save you a lot of hassle; I have the same set up. I scan 6X6 trannies on an Epson; what I did was to get the bare tranny and put the bare tranny (no mount, but between two pieces of plate glass 1/4 plate, cut to size, straight onto the scanner glass. ) Works like a dream - the weight of the glass holds the tranny flat, no curling, so no distortion. Dead easy- any glass place will cut the glass for you at minimal cost. Hope this helps !

Jery, wouldn't this cause a lot of Newton rings? I have tried this using anti-Newton glass and sometimes still get rings. Without the anti-Newton rings, the scans are not useable because of the rings.
