Christmas is approaching and Sally and I are thinking about having a few of our best Birds in Flight printed and given as presents. Please help us decide which ones you think are the top 3.

The criteria I would use to make my choices would be to just use a process of elimination based on whether there is good enough eye focus, would it read well from across the room, is the birds form appealing, and just the general composition. Based on that I might eliminate those with unfortunate backgrounds that detract from, or absorb the bird. 3 has a softer background giving nice separation but the eye is almost lost in darkness. The real winners are those against the sky, and 4 works very well. 2, despite having a very nice eye seems to me an awkwardly posed moment, and an awkward composition. 5 has a pretty sharp eye and feather detail but the background is very distracting and the bird is uncomfortably positioned a little far to the left. In 4 I see some processing that has clipped the top feather, and left a horizontal line there as well as a vertical line at the tip of the bill. The highlight areas look just a little blown as well. So my pick would be 7, 8 and 3. I think 3 would benefit from a little sharpening, especially to benefit the eye. If using unsharpen mask I think a radius of 4 with the amount set at about 38 or so would work.

I do like raptors, but also the poses and backgrounds in those three are best for printing IMHO.

I love the colors on the bird in #1 - by far my favorite. The background detracts a bit from the impact for me, though. #'s 4,5 and 7 are my other top pics. Thanks for asking - hope your gift giving is fun for all!
