I keep having ads for a small lighting gadget called Lume Cube pop up in my Facebook feed. Of course, when I checked the website out now I'm seeing the ads even more often! :) I am intrigued and thinking about purchasing one...anyone here have one and can give a little insight???

I don't have one yet. I'm posting mostly because I'm curious too.

With film, white balance and color temperature were critical. Photographic lighting had to be right stuff. Flash was the only good portable choice.

With digital you can get the white balance right in post processing. That seems to open up the entire range of bright LED lights. I shot a halloween video a couple years ago with a pocket LED flashlight velcroed to my camera. It worked! (I'll post a link if anyone wants it.)

Costco trips for groceries always requires a stroll down the tool aisle. The LED worklights vary, but always make me wonder what the photographic opportunities are. Currently there is a 120 volt Porter Cable that is blinding bright for $40. A year ago I bought a rechargeable DeWalt worklight for $30 that I think could be used like a Lume Cube.

I see the Lume Cube as a photographic specific flashlight. I think I want one.

Also check Litra. They have a similar cube light. Here is a comparison:

Personally, I use the LitraPro. A little bigger, easier to use, easy to adjust intensity and color temperature.

Mine came last Sunday from Amazon. I purchased it as a light source for duplicating 35mm negatives and slides using the Nikon ES-2 on a D850. I haven't used yet, but the 10 step adjustable light output could make it useful for other things.

I decided to buy it quite a while back after seeing a video showing it being used with the ES-2. I just got around to buying it.

Lume cube is just one of the dozens of photo LED lights of all shapes and sizes on the market. I think they were originally intended to be used for video with today's smaller mirrorless cameras but they work great for stills also. I was introduced to them several months ago during a macro photography class at the local university. They are great for macro or close up photography as you can direct them onto your subject from any direction and set the exposure without the fuss of the flash. I mounted the LED onto to a small travel tripod and directed the light as needed onto my subject.

Many even have adjustable color temp. and intensity. Most come with attachments that can be attached to the hot shoe of the camera or simply mounted on a small tripod or just held. There are usually no electrical attachments to the camera, you just turn it on and adjust the camera's exposure accordingly.

All the photo stores carry them or you can find them on Amazon by the dozens. Most are less than $50.

Just received a "Neewer" brand CN-160 LED Photo/Video light from Amazon, 160 LEDs, will light up a large room, or dim down to a glow, and beside using AA batteries, will use my Sony camera batteries, and others. It was $22 delivered, I like it well enough I'm going to get another. And free returns till Jan 31 if it doesn't meet my needs/or has an issue......hard to go wrong with that... many others to choose from as well...

That why I got mine, pretty handy to use as a small flashlight too.

At first I resisted the Lume Cube thinking they were probably just toys for people who didn't want to invest in a "real" lighting system, but like Bill–de I decided to get one to go with the Nikon ES-2 setup. I liked it so much, I eventually got five of them, along with all of the modifiers, gels, barndoors etc. They are all the original 1.0 model, with a nominal color temperature of 6000K, which is a little on the "cool" side. The new 2.0 version is 5600K which is a little more neutral daylight temperature, with longer battery life and some additional features and controls. I'll probably end up with some of those also.

Is that anything like a sugar cube?

For those who are wondering what it is:

I have version 2. It comes with a attachment that screws into the 1/4 - 20 threads on the cube and slides into the camera's hot shoe.

I have a cube, it comes with a defuser that slips over the front of the cube. It has several setting that go from low lumen to high lumen and then to strobe as you press the button on the top. You hold the button down until it shuts off. It is great for providing back light or additional lighting to a subject being photographed. It is small and easy to position, take along on a trip and holds a charge for a long time. It also can be mounted to a camera shoe with an adapter, great for macro photography. A little pricy but worth the $
