It has been announced that Sears and K-Mart will close 96 Stores nationwide. There will only be 182 Stores that will remain open, nationwide. I remember when they were called Sears/Roebuck. Before the computer age, Sears was also known to have a very effective mail order catalog system, going back many decades. Along with their famous stores. There's a Sears and K-Mart in my community. Perhaps not for long. The last time I visited each, none of the stores were crowded. Poor management, or just too much competition from other stores outlets?

That's too bad. We lost our K-Mart years ago, and Sears closed within the last year. Lowe's is selling Craftsman tools.

I believe our big k-mart across the road from us is closing, not surprised, have never seen it busy. Rumor mill says target going in. was in a Lowe’s a few days back, Craftsman everywhere you looked!

That is a shame. We lost our local K-Mart about 5 years ago. I don't like the alternative, wal-mart. For the OP' s daily trivia, the very first Sears Rroebucks rettail sale, was in Plymouth, Indiana. The town I live in.

My local Sears has been a miserable store to shop in for years. Many of the displays were old and falling apart. The prices were never good enough to justify the less-than-stellar shopping experience. The business did not move with the times. When they sold off one of their few most profitable divisions, Craftsman tools, it was obvious to me that the end is near. After 10 years with no profits, selling off one of the few profitable product lines you have to raise cash is a desperation move.

Kmart closed on our town 7 years ago. Walmart built across the street and that was the end. Bad part is we voted Walmart down twice due to zoning issues. They threatened to sue and the city acquiesced because we are small and could not afford to fight. Sad part is several of our small businesses went out also. The people that voted Walmart down shop there. Stupid people. If they had boycotted Walmart and their gangster move they would have closed by now

They have been closed in my area now for several years.

2 KMarts closed here years ago and Sears more recently. I had a bad experience with Sears Optical, with the manager blaming employees and telling me things she shouldn't. It was just an indication of the downward slide before the store closed. Too bad. My parents always bought Kenmore applances and Craftsman tools and we did, too. Now we have another brand refrigerator from Home Depot, first non-Kenmore large appliance we ever had.

About 5 miles from our house is a huge Sears Grand store. Since it’s close to a Costco, I wander through the aisles occasionally. I think I could fall asleep on the floor and not be disturbed for hours if not days.

K-Mart ignored the coming of etail, as did Sears. At the time of their merger, any number of econ folks warned that a merger of poor performers would be a formula for failure. Both had staid, hide-bound management, which ignored the changing economy. J.C. Penney is in the same boat, only a matter of time before they fail.

Yes, Walmart is a behemoth, but local governments would be far better serve their constituents if they welcomed the changes. Walmart pays a lot of local taxes, directly and indirectly. Closed K-Mart and Sears stores are drags on the tax base.

Boycotts are a waste of time, because Walmart doesn't rely on just the local gentry for their shopping customers. Boycotts only cost the consumer.
