some say a few of his cats had six toes
When I visited his house in Key West in 1973, there were 104 cats lounging all around the grounds, trees, roof, and house. They ALL had 6 toes on all their feet.
I was there in 1969 and saw them. He also had a urinal being used as a planter.

Polydactyl is the term. Many toed. The first cat was a female, a gift from a seaman. Being that Key West is small, the cats are inbred.
Thus the six toe trait. I think it is common across the island now.
Lastly, "Death in the Afternoon" is Hemingway on bullfighting.
A good read.

Very nice photo of this beautiful kitty!!
I have a polydactyl that has 7 true toes (not dew claws) on each front foot with a dew claw on each. She has 5 true toes on each back foot with a dew claw on each. The poly's that I have seen previously had normal paws with extra dew claws so I find Sparkle's paws to be unique. I have tried for years to get photos of her paws.
If this is your kitty please give him/her hugs and kisses from me!!

Yes, when I visited the place many years ago, there were lots of cats and they all had 6 toes.

Shux - I missed the cat. Guess I need to revisit Key West. Nice image, clownfish.

My family once had a dog with 6 nails on one foot, guess what his name was....obviously, Nails.

When I was there several times in the 90's, the count was 57, and there were those with more than normal number of toes, and other mal-formations.
A very nice shot of the kitty.

We just got back from our annual visit to Key West, and while most of
the cats there are polydactyls, about 15% of them are normal five
toed cats, even though all of the cats on this property are direct
descendants of the original polydactyl cat Hemingway had.
The current total population was around 59 cats, and quite a few
of them have at least one extra toe (not dew claw) on both front
feet and one cat has an extra toe on all of it's feet, and if you count
the dew claws on that one, that's 28 nails....
