Loc: San Francisco Bay Area
Here are a couple more pictures from Rhyolite. Maybe it's because I've visited it many times, but I thought pictures of Rhyolite would be passe. However, several people indicated they'd like to see more, so here you go.
Rhyolite is a typical mining boomtown in Nevada, just outside the boundaries of Death Valley NP. Gold was found nearby in 1904 and overnight the town came into existence, Over 2000 claims were made in the area.
The town's peak was in 1907, when the town was electrified and the owner of the Montgomery Shoshone mine (the biggest in the area) claimed to be pulling $10,000 of gold a day out of the ground.
But the financial panic of 1907 sounded the town's death knell. Banks failed and businesses collapsed. By 1910, there were only 611 residents in town. The Montgomery Shoshone mine shut down in 1911, and the electricity was shut off in 1916.
It went like it came.
Two very nice images. Interesting place.
