Anyone have any experience with this lens? The reviews I have read are interesting.

I have had the older one ring version, used one of the two-ring versions and have used the newer 70-200 versions with VR.

I much prefer the two-ring version as I found it hard to keep framing while zooming using the sliding ring.
The only drawbacks I see are lack of VR and maybe... a touch slower autofocus. Could just be my perception .
Can't fault lens sharpness on any of them (other than more keepers with VR in low light).
I shoot events and hardly ever use a tripod, so the VR is important to me.

I have a friend who's selling hers.
I've used it. It's good.
PM me if you're interested and I'll contact her.

Have been using mine for about a year; mostly for taking hockey photos of my grandson's team. I rented a 70-200 for a weekend, and it was probably a little nicer, but out of my budget range for now. The 80-200 is very sharp and I've had no problems with it. It would be nice if you could remove the tripod mount to lighten the load a little (as you can on the 70-200), but overall I'm very satisfied with it. The link under my signature will take you to my Flickr page where I've got a lot of the photos posted.

Had one for 12 years, loved it. Just sold it. Replaced it with the 70-200 FL. Until this lens, I saw no reason to replace the 80-200.

What are you shooting? I bought one of these on EBAY just to have it, but with my birding, i just never had reason to use it, so i sold it. Would you use the lens if you had it?

I have the original model. Push pull zoom removable tripod Mount. Sharp as a tack but auto focus is to slow for sports ect. If you are using it for movement get a newer model.

I bought one used on Ebay several years ago. Except for the weight, I'd use it most of the time. I think it's an amazingly sharp lens. I've used it at 80mm for close up candid portraits of my grandchildren and they are super sharp.

Looks like there is one for sale right now in the classifieds. $500 is a pretty good deal.

Hi well I love Nikon have the D500 D850 and the 24-120 and the new 500mm PF but I tried my friends f.28 Tamron 70-200mm and it is so sharp and has great contrast I went with it at almost 1000.00 less just a suggestion

Yes, I shot for years with that lens. IF, it is the D version, it may not auto focus with the new Nikon Z series camera's. I never had an issue with that lens but, as this lens ages, things can go wrong with it. Auto focus is not as quick as today's Nikon auto focus lenses but it was not slow either.
As far as sharpness went, I used it from the balcony and from the back of the church during wedding ceremonies and it always delivered extremely sharp images. NEVER HAD TO FIND TURN, was great out of the box. The lens was heavy, you could use it for self defense in a parking lot if needed.
