While visiting friends of ours in Springfield IL who were celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary, we had the chance to visit Lincoln's New Salem, a State Historical Site about 15 miles from Springfield itself. We'd been there several times over the years, but last time was at least 10 years ago.
It's now "this is the way back when" reconstructed village. The village of New Salem existed from about 1809 to 1841. Abe Lincoln found his way there when he was 22 years old in 1831 and stayed for about 6 years, working as a shopkeeper, general store owner, postmaster, surveyor, and rail splitter, not very successful in any of those positions. The village population ranged from 20 - 25 families over the years and was finally abandoned around 1841. Here are a couple of photos from our visit on a sunny, but cold Saturday morning.
I like the split rail fence image. vz
