Since you shoot Nikon, many of the DX bodies have the internal 1.3X Crop capability....it is called "Image Area" in the menu - it works better than teleconverters, there is no extra glass in the path, no light loss. It is a crop, but in the field it allows me to fill the frame with the push of a re-assigned button, and if well taken, no loss of detail. I have a number of TC's that I skip over because of this feature. You won't (opinion) be happy with a TC on the 55-300 (had it, tried it), at best you might get away with a quality 1.4, but would still expect less than stellar results , 1.7 very doubtful results, 2X, "fogedaboutit".... and many (like the 55-300) will not AF with the bigger TC's.

You don't need to crop in the body - it has no advantage whatsoever over cropping in post processing. In fact, with the narrower angle of view, it may be a little harder to keep the subject in the frame if it is moving or flying. A sharp lens with a 1.4 TC beats a crop pretty much any day.

I bought a Kenko 1.4x TELEPLUS PRO 300. Tried it with my Nikon AF-P Nikor 70-300 DX lens. Took a few test shots at max zoom using a tripod. Auto-Focus works, but very soft images. Probably should have returned it. I didn't think, I paid all that much for it, but just reviewing my Amazon order, I see I paid $139 for it. Don't waste your money. Pictures OK for desktop viewing, but not much more.
Not seeing how to attach a photo in reply.
OK - can do it in edit, but had to save as a smaller file to get it to upload.

And this is what you can get with the same TC and a sharp lens. (A 70-200 F2.8 FL)

If you are looking, I strongly suggest the Nikon 200-500 5.6 lens. It will likely go on sale for around $1200.00 during Black Friday, Cyber Monday, or over the holidays. It is an excellent lens and has strong reviews from folks who use it.
Wow, looks like it is on sale NOW. And 4% back, so that's like an extra $48.00 you can use later for some goodie you've been wanting.

Thanks. I have a lead on a one year old 200-500 for $900 Canadian. (About $700 US)
Waiting to hear back now.

If the rear element of your lens hits the t/c you may be forced to buy a damaged t/c as well as paying to repair your lens.

I don't understand why you asked for advice here after getting advice from Nikon, if you were going to ignore it all anyway.

I'm not the one who asked for advice; I merely 'responded' with a supplied Nikon Corporate response to "my own" T/C query. Check the thread. Confused are we...

Absolutely amazing what some people can convince themselves of. Hope he doesn’t wreck his 55-300mm.

I haven't seen another reference to a 55-300mm lens beyond the 'original question' yet in this thread. He wasn't "convinced" one way or the other; just seeking advice from 'experienced' users. Just sayin'......

I too was disappointed in the quality of photos I got with the Kenko 1.4 teleconverter with my Nikon 70-300 VR lens while on safari at Kruger. I used 1/2 a day and kept it in my bag since then. It may be a lens shake problem on my part - I am a newbie.

Understand you have NO WARRANTY with a used Nikon lens. Buying new you have a 5 year warranty.
Today's lenses are complicated and have a lot of electronics in them.
I had issues with my 200-500, yes, Nikon fixed them but it was after the lens was a year old.
My advice, buy new and get the 5 year warranty.

Quite often, and it gets worse with each passing year.
