After my recent vacation and carrying my Nikon D5300 camera on a strap around my neck, I think it’s time to get a harness chest carrier. I have been looking at the Cotton Carrier and at $120, it’s a bit steep. I am looking to carry just one camera.

I would use the harness for hiking, vacations, biking, and anytime I want to be hands and neck pain free. Hiking canyons two weeks ago was tough with my camera bouncing around, and I found myself holding it steady with one hand while around my neck.

Any thoughts are appreciated!

Carol

I looked through several camera manuals and could not find anything about carrying the camera by the tripod socket. You might want to contact Nikon before your purchase.

Nikon sells a sling strap - a rebranded Black Rapid with a Nikon label on it. I am pretty sure it's not an issue. I've been using a single and a double strap, mostly for day-long events - for ov3r 10 years. Still haven't had an issue. Most of the early problems were due to a fastening system that could come loose if you didn't check it before you started using it.

Carol, I love my Cotton Carrier. If you often use a backpack for personal items, you might want to take a look at this:

I use a Black Rapids sling strap which mounts via the tripod socket. I've never had a problem. I do however, recommend, checking on a regular basis, to make sure it is secure.

I have the cotton carrier but do not use it often. It is good for hiking as I have two hands to use as needed. I have found it a bit bulky in nature but they could have upgraded since I bought it. It's a nice tool, not sure if there are any other carriers of this type. I've used two cameras on it, too, with the long lens being held in the middle and the smaller lens/camera on the side. It worked fine. I don't like the straps that carry the camera by the tripod screw but others may recommend them.

That's a tough one, Carol. Chest pouches were popular in the 90s but as lenses got HUGE, they went out of favor. I still use my Galen Rowell Photoflex pouch now and then (https://danbaileyphoto.com/blog/yay-replacement-photoflex-galen-rowell-chest-pouch/). Can still be found on Ebay and work well with a crop-frame camera and a zoom if the lens is not a monster.

Not sure how I feel about carrying a camera by a tripod screw. The Cotton Carrier may be right for me. My husband saw someone wearing the vest on our last trip and was impressed by it. I am the one carrying the camera. He carries my bag of accessories. So I am looking for comfort and ease of use.

You could go with something like this. Don't need the second part, or you could use it for binoculars. Up to you. Still would have to steady the camera in rigorous situations. But, would take a load off the shoulders.

https://www.amazon.com/Double-Shoulder-Release-Camera-Dual-Shoulder/dp/B07F1SVKPN/ref=asc_df_B07F1SVKPN/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312148122212&hvpos=1o14&hvnetw=g&hvrand=10405485140865185783&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9053148&hvtargid=pla-593226212314&psc=1

Or something like this:

https://www.amazon.com/Nicama-Carrier-Harness-Mounting-Olympus/dp/B07Q42FL4M/ref=asc_df_B07Q42FL4M/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=366307948963&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=4220513621549375136&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9053148&hvtargid=pla-787345480537&psc=1&tag=&ref=&adgrpid=74513439245&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvadid=366307948963&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=4220513621549375136&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9053148&hvtargid=pla-787345480537

Or if you're using a backpack or day bag, something like this:

https://www.adorama.com/khbcskhrd.html?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIr4z7rM_K5QIVB7zACh2AJQHbEAQYBiABEgJTtvD_BwE

I started with a Black Rapid strap. Worked well, but had the same issues. Switched all of my gear over to Peak Design. Well thought out and just plain works for my needs. I have several of these that I can attach to a belt or strap. Whatever the situation......

Lot of options out there. Hope that helps.

The Cotton Carrier is a brilliant bit of kit: but you do have to pay for it. I currently own the G3 twin and prior to that, the original. My original was replaced under warranty after two years eleven months (my fault). Prior to that, I owned a Chinese copy, which I purchased from Amazon. It cost about a quarter of the price of a Cotton Carrier and did the job, until I broke the chest lugg by failing to secure my Canon 300mm f2.8L IS one day.

Years ago, I purchased the Lowepro S&F Technical Harness and Belt, but never used it. I believe that I opened the boxes to check for fit, but, again, never put it to use. I know that I paid over $100 for it, but I am offering it up for $60 plus shipping. I have closed the account that I used for PayPal, so a money order is preferred. John

I use Peak Design and it has saved my neck, back. I place the camera in the small of my back. Where it's safe and leaves my hand free to maneuver freely. I have them for M43 and DSLR.

Well worth the reasonable price...
