Betatakin

Viewing Greymule's post of Navajo National Monument brought me back to thinking about our two trips there to see the Betatakin ruin about 1962 or '63 and again in '72. On our first trip there the ranger actually took us right into the ruin, which I'm assuming is a big "no no" now.

Wow, imagine living in that opening where your entire world was pretty much as far as you could walk around. The roof over some of the ruins in Mesa Verde NP have started to crack and fall, closing off access due to safety. This hollowing out can lead to natural arches in few thousand years, if we wait long enough.

Thank you, CHG CANNON, Iron Sight, Bob, Mike and Rick for your comments. Yes, these photos were taken in the 60's and 70's and the originals were 35mm slides. In posting I wrote some explanations about these photos, but apparently didn't do it right. I'm sure I have more that I made black and white, but finding them is something else. I'd love to get back down there again, but my chances for that are almost nil. The girl in the one photo is our Shoshone foster daughter who knew nothing about the Navajos. The painting is on the cliff is right by the dwelling.

Thank you Luen. This is truly a wonderful formation in that rocky hill side. At first I did n't realize how large it was until I saw your photos of the village within it's massive archway. Possibly the biggest one in the Americas......I can only imagine. Wonderful to see and appreciate it . Thank you again.

Thank you, Blair, Mm0605 and Blacks2 for looking and commenting. It is big, Blair, but I think not the largest. There is another one there on the Reservation (can't remember the name) that I've seen photos of that may be larger. There are several others around Southern Utah and other western states that are not in protected areas such as National Monuments or Parks. I have this hope that when I get "on the other side" there will be a great movie playing that will let us see all this history as it played out.
