Of course, it depends on many factors but from my personal experience, Canon 5D mk 1 is a great camera for portraits (of course the "right" lenses are needed but - hey - get a used "nifty fifty" and you could make some descent work). This is an old, Canon full frame camera, allowing plenty of light in.

Lost my DSLR in a recent burglary and want to wait for advances in the mirrorless field before deciding on a new replacement. In the meantime, any suggestions for an under $500 used DSLR for mainly portrait shooting?

Thanks,

Bruce H.

...Wait. ..What? Waiting for "Advancements in the Mirrorless field" ? Wow!

~ Apparently we'll be waiting for the OP to respond about the same time as "the advancements"! I hope she/he proves me wrong!!

Do you have ANY gear?
A Fuji S5pro and a Nikon 85mm 1.8D should be close to $500.
Stunning skin tones right out of the camera.

My favorite combo is the S5pro and a Sigma 50-150 2.8. (the Sigma is out of your budget.)

Great suggestion! I recently sold my Fuji and my legs are sore from chasing myself around the yard and kicking my own a...

No better digital for portraiture. I shoot film, though, most of the time for portraits with my F2A/ or F4, but the Fuji has rendered some truly awesome shots, especially of the g-kids when they aren't looking, and quickies at family gatherings. The Fuji is one of the most underrated cameras out there. I just may buy another.

What did you have before and why would you not want to replace it?

I think it may have something to do with the fact that he mentioned he was burglarized and I would assume it was stolen

The good news is there are lots of deals on DSLRs and used prices are in freefall.

You did not say what camera was stolen. But why not just buy used the same camera that was stolen? Heck you might get your own camera back.

Sorry for my late reply. I had a Nikon D90 with 18-200 AF lens. My interest is doing inside portrait work for friends and family initially and possibly expanding depending on the results. Always had a Nikon but open to other brands.

Thanks for the responses.
