I plan on shooting the Blue Angels here in SF today and throughout the weekend, I am thinking Shutter Priority 1/2000 minimum white balance sunny, as I am obviously not concerned about capturing propeller movement. Yes No other suggestions?

I haven't shot at Fleet Week, but elsewhere I use 1/1250 to 1/1600 to freeze their performance. The 1/2000 or faster is best just for those crossing runs to get both planes.

White balance will depend on which direction you are shooting with respect to the sun and can make a pretty big difference. Even if the sun is behind you, the sides of the aircraft that you see may shaded from direct sunlight, meaning that you would need to go bluer...to overcast or more likely to open shade. You may just have to experiment. If you are shooting toward the sun, then the aircraft are being illuminated by the blue sky behind you, and open shade will most likely be your best choice. The good news is that changing the white balance on your D500 is quick and easy to do, so it will be very easy to do some test shots to see what works best. My experience is that if you use sunlit WB when it is not called for while shooting the Blue Angels, the aircraft will get lost against a "too blue" sky and the contrast between the yellow markings and the blue primary paint will be lost (or at least drastically diminished).

I have been reading some reviews on this lens, as I have have one but would like some clarifications. I understand that VC 2 Mode is for panning (I will be shooting the blue Angels) and some say to leave the VR off as this may in fact slow down the focusing capabilities of this lens, Yes/No Suggestions.

Also I will be shooting them Shutter Priority at a minimum of 1/2000 faster Yes/No

Set at 3D mode I understand this helps in the front to back movements while the VC2 helps with side to side panning Yes/No

At 1/2000 sec shutter speed the VC is of no value and CAN slow down your focus as the lens must find stabilization in order to autofocus. Turn it off when shooting such fast shutter speeds.

Listen to MT Shooter, he speaks the absolute truth. IS, VR, VC or what ever the manufacturer calls it, is useless at high shutter speeds. Turn it off.

I suggest you be on a monopod with a good articulating head if you are going to be shooting for extended periods of time with THAT lens ...If it were me, I would be using the Tamron 100-400 hand held all day.

Maybe the most best "photo" thing I've learned this week, never thought about it, Thank-you.

Shoot at 10 frames/second. Your XQD card should be your primary. In fact, if you're using a second back up card for jpg, you might consider removing it because that extra, slower card will cause premature filling up of your buffer, and a slow-down in your overall shooting.

Not if he is using the proper UHS-II SD card, they will keep up with 10fps just fine, even shooting RAW. XQD is only absolutely necessary when shooting 4K video.

Define "proper." I wasn't referring to cards such as the SanDisk Extreme PRO SDXC 300MB/s UHS-II Card - 128GB which Amazon sells for about $200. If the writer is using a less expensive back-up card, the camera's speed will likely suffer.

UHS-II are the PROPER SD cards. If you don't use them you cannot take advantage of the cameras full shooting speed.

Traveler/MT. I do use the XQD card primarily As I often use my camera for birding, just so happens yesterday I forgot to put the SD card in. And filled the XQD rather quickly. And couldn't find my other one my SD cards are the older 90/95 extremes, so buffer was definitely a problem after that. But found I was really too far away to Get any real keepers, We'll try to get a bit closer today.

Just wondering, what is the storage capacity of your XQD card?
