After reading these threads, I am now considering a Nikon 85mm f1.8 lens. I already own both the DX 35mm f1.8, and the FX 50mm f1.8. I like both of these lenses, especially the DX 35mm f1.8. I bought both lenses, one at a time. Both lenses totaled about $450. They may be lesser priced today. A lot of good information on this post.

I have the Nikon 85mm f1.8 - great lens good for portraits. Before that I used a 50mm f1.4 - great portraits after cropping.
As to which lens best reproduces the human eye - angle of vision 35mm, geometry 50mm, fovea vision 60mm - approximations as every retina is different.

50 is not a good portrait lens. you want to go to 70-80 with your full frame cameras. A 50mm in a non full frame is a 80mm. You may not want to go to a prime lens which does not give you the flexibilities of zoom.
I'm far from an "expert", but I reckon with the humongous
pixel count of the 5DS-R; a 50mm would be ok for portraits...
simply by cropping into an image shot at a few extra metres of
distance... there by eliminating the "big" nose syndrome that's
produced by shorter lenses at close range.
The pay off is all the advantages of that focal length being
about perfect for a 35mm sensor.
