OK, the cards are here! The new CFExpress cards started shipping last week, got my first shipment today. Now if only Nikon would move up the firmware update so I can start using them!

Is this basically the same as an XQD card with faster read/write speeds?

Call me an idiot but I don't understand the these new CF cards. Is this a newer version of the CF card that the D810 uses? What cameras will be able to use it? I have a D750 so I know I can't use the XQD card.

MUCH faster and at about the same price. CFExpress will allow for 8K in camera video.

CFExpress is totally different from CF. It shares the same format as XQD cards but at 4-5 times the write speeds. XQD is used in D4, D4s, D5, D500, D850, Z6, Z7, and almost all upcoming pro and semi pro format cameras from Nikon. Will require a firmware update to work in those cameras which Nikon has promised will be coming in November.

They should have call the new CFExpress card an XQDExpress or XQD II card. It's really the same format with the same contacts isn't it? The name would suggest that it's a new version of CF or CFast.

Choosing names is a weak point for the photography industry.

Have you tried a CFExpress card anyway in one of your unpatched XQD cameras? I'm wondering if CFExpress might work as XQD as a backwards compatibility capability at the card level?

Actually I did try one in both a Z7 and D850, card is not recognized by either.
Once the firmware update is loaded the XQD will be the "backwards compatible" card format.

Darn. I was hoping the card hardware might have some XQD backward compatibility. The firmware backwards compatibility has been talked about a lot, but I've never seen it mentioned about the physical card side. Now we know. Thanks for trying it and sharing!

No different that SDHC, or SDXC cards not working in older SD only cameras. Same issue. But at least XQD cameras are firmware upgradeable where the old SD cameras were not.
