What a GREAT video... EVERYONE on this forum should take the time to watch and listen closely to this video; esp. the example of the 2 photographers. The closing line was so true... " You don't know what you don't know ".
A good explanation, esp for those who learn from visual presentations.
Long ago, before this study I read a paper by some researchers at one of the Ivy League schools that studied competency. Maybe it was these guys or some colleagues in their early years of research. But the conclusion of the paper was the same as this, without the name attached. The more competent a person was, the lower they ranked themselves, the less competent the higher they ranked themselves. They found that at the top of each field the most competent people did know they were at the top but they were even more aware of how much they didn't know. Like the old saying in the hard science community "For every question we answer we find three new questions."
Some other teachers at the school where I worked read the same article, maybe it was in one of our educational journals. One of them came up with a sign he put up next to his classroom door and a lot of the rest of us copied it.
Ignorance is not against the law but not doing something about it should be! I always paired it with the old
There are no dumb questions, only dumb answers! and I added one that defined words the students often used and misused
Dumb=not intelligent Stupid=acting in a dumb way even if you are intelligent Ignorant=you don't know something, everyone is ignorant depending on the subject at hand(I don't remember the source, just the meat of the paper & its ideas stuck and I used it to help plan my research and lesson plans, esp how to help students understand how much they didn't know yet.)
And the most dangerous of all these is
The things you don't even know you don't know. In real life those are the ones that can bite you by total surprise.
Great video. My grandfather used to tell me that I didn't know what I didn't know. As a 10 year old, I was puzzled until my chemistry teacher covered something similar to this study.
I read a book titled, "Politically Incorrect Guide to History". In it the author related that American students had high opinions of their own math prowess, but scored lower than Asian students who believed they were only so-so in math but scored higher than Americans.
The phenomenon seems like it spills over into sports. There are lots of people out there who believe they are great golfers, baseball players, etc. Until you've watched a real pro apply his skills, you just have no idea how talented they really are.
Thank you, everyone, for watching the video and for taking the time to make some very thoughtful comments.
Thanks for sharing. This has motivated me to purchase Steve Perry’s “ Secrets of the Nikon Auto Focus System”.

I know what I don’t know, but I don’t know what I know😂😂😂
Sad but true. I've observed this behavior for years. The stupidest people talk the most, shout the loudest, and are more forceful in spreading their erroneous ideas. This loud, forceful behavior influences other stupid people.

Your comment is a clever plot to squelch comments? 😎

1. We know what we know
2. We know what we don’t know
3. We don’t know what we don’t know
Great video - thanks for posting!

Amen Jerry. And now I know what effect some of our politicians are suffering from.
If you check my old replies, I have called AOC the poster child for Dunning-Kruger.......
